"Upload failed" for large folders using Google drive in Chrome browser
0
I am trying to upload a folder with a lot of subfolders and files. The total size of the folder is ~2TB. I have unlimited space to upload this much data (enterprise account); I currently have 5TB of data in my google drive.

What happens: I drag and drop the folder into the drive web app. This usually works for small folders or files. After a couple minutes, I start getting errors. A triangle with an exclamation appears in the upload box. When I click on the triangle, I get a pop up that shows the failed file uploads. The errors read "upload failed' for files. As far as I can tell, this happens for many but not all files, and it is not clear why certain files fail and some don't. I am still able to upload those files one at a time, but not when they are part of a folder. Note that the folder/files are in a network drive, so I am not able to use "Backup & Sync" (doesn't support network drives), and since the folder is so big, I'm unable to put it on a local drive to use the "Drive File Stream" app.

other info:
- Windows 7 SP1
- There is an antivirus on this computer (ESET NOD32)
- Wired connection to web and server
- The files are diverse in type. Many file types fail (.bmp, .tif, .h5)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Workarounds also accepted. I'm just trying to get this folder onto my drive and the subfolder structure is too complicated to do it manually.

Greetings and Welcome to Google Drive Help Community 😀

It is a rather large folder to upload all at once.
However I'm glad to see you are using a wired connection.

Kindly answer the following questions:
  • Could you provide a screenshot of the error?
  • Are you  using the Chrome Browser?
  • Have you tried disabling the virus scan?
  • Are the files all owned by you?
Best,

Responding to Ms. Drasby: Thank you so much for helping!
  • Could you provide a screenshot of the error?
Sure. I retried uploading a subset of some of the subfolders and am getting the same error(s). Here are a couple screenshots explaining:

the above screen shot shows the upload mini window. All of the folders I've attempted to upload have some type of error.

the above screen shot shows the error messages if I click on the triangle of one warning messages from the first screenshot

The files that fail to upload are of diverse types and sizes. Each .tif is about 1GB, other files that fail can be as small as a couple KB.

  • Are you  using the Chrome Browser?
Yes
  • Have you tried disabling the virus scan?
Yes, errors still occur
  • Are the files all owned by you?
Yes. They are lossless videos and some other files related to my work

I had a similar problem when loading large files onto Drive with Internet Explorer.  The problem disappeared when I stated using Chrome to load onto Drive instead.

How much storage space do  you have  in Google Drive?
Also how much hard drive storage space is  on the device?

Thanks again for the responses,

Have you tried clicking on the red exclamation marks?
Upon hovering over the red exclamation marks, they turn into a 'Retry' button.

How much storage space do  you have  in Google Drive?
Unlimited. This is not the issue. I have had my drive much more full than this before.

Also how much hard drive storage space is  on the device?
On the computer itself, not enough to hold all the files. They are on a network drive, which has effectively unlimited storage.

It could be the limited storage space on the device causing the issue.

Think of the device as a working brain. Even though it doesn't store the information due to  space it still needs enough space for the thinking process to work.

I would try deleting  some items from the devices hard drive. Maybe start by emptying the devices trash.
You may also want to delete some of the files in the devices download folder.

Best,
Ms. Drasby

That would be very very strange. I am uploading directly from the network drive to google drive. I don't see my RAM usage being maxed out or my disk usage being maxed out.
In any case, the folders I am trying to upload are an order of magnitude larger than my local storage maximum.

I'm just sharing this recommendation due to a personal experience.
Once enough room was made on the device the upload worked.

You are correct it is possible this isn't your issue but how will you know if it  isn't tried?

I do use both stream, back up & sync and the Android sync client...

They  all work differently and I happen to like Google Stream because  it works off of the domain network versus storing on the hard drive.

Regarding getting enough storage space on my local machine: "You are correct it is possible this isn't your issue but how will you know if it  isn't tried?"
It's impossible for me to try because the folders are larger than the maximum capacity of my hard disks. As I mentioned, the folders are multiple terabytes (some as large as 10TB) and my hard drives on the computer in question are 512GB. If I had enough hard disk space I would just upload them using file stream. Willing to try any other ideas.

Exactly that is the problem the "Files are larger than the computer in question".

Is there anyway to use a device with a larger storage  capacity to test uploading one of  the smaller files?

The other choice may be to try zipping the files and then extracting in Drive.
