Hi Rob Damiani!
Going to ask you a few picky questions. This is not to imply some failure on your part. Instead it's possible that there is some kind of subtle interference going on when the app attempts to run.
Let's check a few basics first:
- Which operating system version, including exact build number, are you using?
- Are you using any antivirus/malware apps?
- When you installed and when you use the app, does the Windows account being used have administrator access?
- What do you see in the following start up section:
- Windows Key + X
- Select System
- In the search box type Startup Apps. Select that.
- In Startup Apps, scroll through the list and look for googledrivesync.exe
- Is it there, is it enabled?
Looking forward to seeing your replies!

All,
It's always possible that something goes "boom" when an update is installed. It's certainly not a widespread problem, and my own 5 systems all boot and then start up B&S properly when using the latest/current B&S version.
If you have already crosschecked for proper administrator rights on the account being used to run B&S at login, as some have indicated, then it may be best to completely remove all traces of B&S and then reinstall it.
Please note that a couple of "free" AV programs are known to cause problems not only with B&S, but other non-Google Apps as well.
If the following does not help you, please start your own individual threads so that your exact scenario can be tracked & diagnosed.
Please take the following steps while the Antivirus/Malware is still not running. (Windows OS)
- If installed, please take the proper steps to uninstall Backup & Sync for your computer's OS.
- Reboot the computer
- Clean up any left over install/drive folders/files
- Delete the folder and all subfolders found here: C:\Program Files\Google\Drive
- Depending on where the installation failed, this may not be present
- Delete the folder and all subfolders found here: C:\Users\YOUR-WINDOWS-USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Drive
- Depending on where the installation failed, this may not be present
- Delete the folder and all subfolders found here: C:\Program Files\Google\Drive
- Clean up as much of your Windows Temp folder as possible: C:\Windows\Temp
- While deleting things there, there may be some files that are still open and unable to be deleted. You can just skip those for now.
- Clean out any partial registry keys
- Windows Key + R
- type regedit then click OK to run
- Accept the request by the operating system to permit the command
- Navigate to the key location: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Drive
- Depending on where the installation failed, this may not be present
- If present, on the left side, right click the Drive entry and select delete
The intent here is to ensure that any remnant of the installation is completely removed. Once completed, reboot the computer and install a freshly downloaded copy of Backup & Sync using it's installer from the website.

I tried MisterCanada's solution.... and didn't get it to work.
However, a bit better internet searching actually led me to a solution that worked (albeit a work-around until google itself fixes the problem).
Here's the post I found it at:
https://superuser.com/questions/929225/how-to-run-a-program-as-an-administrator-at-startup-on-windows-10
-- The key is to use the "Task Scheduler" --
(that solution worked for me, though not the original user on that site)
Specifically here's my action steps:
1. Run "Task scheduler" from the window's menu
2. Add a new task
3. Set up the new task to:
- Run with highest privileges
- Trigger on any user LOGON (note, I did NOT set it for start-up intentionally)
- You could experiment with start-up (I plan to), it's possible that this will work correctly since it would still be getting started with the highest privileges
- Navigate to the backup-and-sync executable
- I had already installed B&S using admin privileges, so it was properly permissioned to execute
- Set up action to use a delayed trigger (I used 30 sec)
- I haven't tested if it can be run directly on log-on, but you can play with that if you want.
It seems that perhaps even though the new installer "says" it's adding it to the start-up script...perhaps its not properly adding it with highest privileges.
I noticed that within the "scheduled tasks" all my "google updater" things WERE there and were supposed to run... but nothing from Google Drive.

For some reason, the registry key that gets created when checking the "Open Backup and Sync on system startup" with the Drive Preferences is getting removed after a shutdown/restart. My guess is there's some specific bug that is only affecting certain users which causes the Drive Preferences to reset.
Anyway,
Registry Key Location:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Key:
GoogleDriveSync: "C:\Program Files\Google\Drive\googledrivesync.exe" /autostart
Fix:
Create your own key (I called my GoogleDriveSyncMyKey) inside the same location. Use the identical string as the key which is produced by Drive.
Google Drive boots on startup now without an issue. And yes, you have to mess with the registry, but I like Drive to open on startup, and this may not be a large enough issue for Google to address.
And I'm running Windows 10 Home.
Hope this helps.

It seems when I change networks (on my laptop) it changes the setting so that neither programs start automatically on Windows start-up. I can go back into settings (or preferences) and re-check the box and it will start correctly until I change networks again.
With a laptop you can imagine how annoying this is. It almost sounds like a security issue

I have the same problem with both Onedrive AND Backup & Sync on one of the PCs I use (small office)
I am in the 100GB program in Google (and office 365/1TB (office) on Microsoft).
It happens usually over the weekend, when the PC is down for the 2 days. Weekdays both services start normally....Go figure it out!!! All problems started the last month or so. Probably after a Windows update...

Evidently, something changed in the google side, or some windows 10 upgrade did it.
Anyway, reading these posts, I am shocked to see that Google technicians are blind to accept it and wash their hands of it. They lose their time saying "I'm inocent". What matters? Fix it, please. Thanks.
