Goggle Backup and Sync locking out large files after backup 0 Recommended Answers 25 Replies 70 Upvotes

I have some very large quicken files (150mb) after GBS has backed up those files it keeps the files locked.  Hence, I cannot run Quicken on those files.  Pausing GBS does no good as the only remedy is to exit GBS.  I have reinstalled GBS .. and recently wiped out my hard disk and reinstalled windows with GBS but to no avail.

This is my second email on this matter and have not received a remedy.

Windows 10
Backup and Sync Version: 3.43.2448.9071

My work around is to use a batch file to rename the quicken data file, rename it back, and then and start Quicken, with a delay of a few seconds between renaming and starting Quicken, depending on the speed of your computer, you might need to adjust the Timeout wait seconds. Create a shortcut to the Batch files, so you can change the icon.

rename "D:\PATH\QUICKEN_Date_File.qdf" "QUICKEN_Date_File_Renamed.qdf"
Timeout 7
rename "D:\PATH\QUICKEN_Date_File_Renamed.qdf" "QUICKEN_Date_File.qdf"
Timeout 1
Start "" /i "C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken\qw.exe"
exit

UPDATE 2019-12-16
Instead of using the above script in a batch file that renames the Quicken data file, I use this in a batch file which works much better. I kill Google Drive Sync briefly, start Quicken, then restart Google Drive Sync. This even works if you are using Google Drive Sync to sync with multiple accounts.

1st line kills. closes, stops Google Drive Sync
2nd line starts, runs Quicken
3rd line re-starts, runs Google Drive Sync

taskkill.exe /f /im googledrivesync.exe
Start "" /i "C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken\qw.exe"
Start "" /i "C:\Program Files\Google\Drive\googledrivesync.exe"

p.s.
To change Batch file icon to the red Q, Quicken ican, select change ican, browse to
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Quicken\qw.exe

I am having a similar problem with using Quicken in conjunction with Google Backup and Sync (GBS) that seems to be a result of GBS immediately updating Quicken files while I am in and updating my Quicken program.  I was wondering if the following suggestion would work to resolve this problem.  What if you "pause" GBS every time before opening your Quicken software then click to "resume" GBS after you have updated Quicken and closed the program on your computer?  Please let me know your thoughts on this and thank you in advance for taking the time.

I've had this problem for years. I need to put my working files on OneDrive - it's so insanely annoying :(

The worst part is that the files sometimes just disappear into thin air. Can't believe Google hasn't fixed this yet.

I have this same problem too. Incidentally, Dropbox does NOT have this issue. I just couldn't justify the price increase for as little space that I use, so I came back to Google Drive.

Would be nice for Google to fix this, considering it's been a problem for years.

Sigh...

Gary,

It would be great if you could start your own thread and indicate which file types are being locked. The more users that report specific trackable problems, the easier it will be to escalate things.

Thanks!

@MisterCanada: These posts were talking about Quicken files and I indicated that I too have the same problem. I suppose I should have been more specific: my Quicken data file .QDF

I'm very close to moving to one drive as well - but professionally I see a lot of problems with one drive also. In five years I've rarely seen someone retain their permissions to files, or successfully share a file in a single interaction on one-drive.

After using google drive for 5 years, this is the first time I've seen this issue. It's with all directories and work folders that I shared with a teammate for a project. The entire directory is locked for him, but unlocked for me.  Even with edit permissions granted, he sees the files all start auto-locking, and there's no way to keep them unlocked.
