Using 'Add a shortcut to Drive' with 'Backup and sync from Google'
1
My understanding is that toward the end of last year Google beta tested a change to Google Drive which would replace the ability to select 'Add to My Drive' on shared folders with the option to 'Add a shortcut to Drive'. This appears to have been a GSuite only feature at the time but, as one of my Google accounts is now displaying this behavior, I presume it is being silently rolled out to all Google Drive users.

Previously, 'Add to My Drive' was an extremely useful option for creating a linked copy of a shared folder in your own Google Drive. Installing 'Backup and sync from Google' (terrible name) on a desktop would then allow you to download this shared folder such that it could be worked on locally. Any changes made by someone else with access to the shared folder, or locally by yourself, would be synced with all users.

The new 'Add a shortcut to Drive', which replaces 'Add to My Drive', does not (from what I've been able to discern) work in the same way. On the Google Drive web browser interface it's very similar. The shortcut created in 'My Drive' can be clicked and it will take you to the shared folder where documents can be edited in the web interface as expected. However, when using  'Backup and sync from Google' the shared folder is no longer a local synced copy , it's just a 'Google Drive link' file which, when double clicked, opens a web browser to the shared folder's web interface.

For me, and I imagine many others, this functionality was the core reason for me using Google Drive. Is there a way for me to still have this original workflow in 2020? If not I will be forced to move over to Microsoft's ecosystem - and I doubt I will be alone in this.

Best regards,
Jim

Same. Drive backup and sync always had inferior reliability, but the price was compelling. The loss of this functionality breaks the deal and I will be moving on.

@Boiling Coffee
Your suggestion worked for me, thanks very much. I am still concerned that Google are removing this feature and that this 'hack' is required to continue this workflow.

This is core functionality for me too.

I'm regretfully planning to go back to OneDrive and I'll be canceling my Google One subscription, rather than expand it to the 2 TB plan.
