I would like to save website urls within my google drive folders

I would like to be able to store links to websites within my google drive folders. There seems to be no way to do what should be a simple task.

After a bit of searching I found an extension called glink that allows me to create a file that points to any website is like to have quick access to within any of my Google Drive folders. This is exactly what I needed. I wish Google had thought of this feature. It's terrific.

Thanks Calvin Croucher!

Yes, there can be 3rd party extensions that accomplish some goals. You should keep in mind that those extensions need to be maintained by those 3rd parties and that you need to ensure your extensions are always up to date. Occasionally the creators of such extensions fall behind in maintaining them and thus the extensions could start failing as Google updates the functionality of the products those extensions are used with.

Also, again, please use the feedback mechanism to request such a feature. I can certainly see how it would benefit some users. The more users requesting it, the more of a priority it becomes.

Thanks again for the update!

Hi Calvin Croucher!

Your Google Drive cloud storage area, and any folders on your computers, simply store data files. So for example if you were to export your various saved linked from Chrome to an external file, probably HTML or XML, then if that file is stored on your computer you can either have that synced to the same folder in your cloud, or you could manually upload the file.

If instead you mean you wish to directly create a link to a website inside a folder inside your cloud, then currently there is no option for that.

That being said, the best way to influence the future features being added to Google's Drive products is to give your opinions/needs/requirements to the Developers through the official Send Feedback option that's part of the Backup & Sync application. You can also use the Settings / Help / Send Feedback option on your Drive's webpage interface.

Otherwise it's unlikely that Developers would know exactly how many people are requesting features/making reports of issues and such (They spend their time mostly working on features and issues, not reading forums). Using the Send Feedback will allow for behind-the-scenes categorization and prioritization of such feedback, along with easy summary total tracking of each similar request.

Here are the exact steps when going through Backup & Sync:

1) Click on your Backup & Sync icon (Cloud) on your taskbar/notification area.
2) Click on the 3 dots at the very right side to access the Settings.
3) Click on Send Feedback

Here are the exact steps when going through your Drive's webpage interface:

1) Click this to open your Drive's webpage interface: My Drive Cloud's Webpage
2) Click on the ? for Help on that webpage's top right side
3) Choose Send Feedback, typically at the bottom of the Help popup

It will not be possible to receive a reply to your feedback, but be assured that all feedback is reviewed and actioned as deemed appropriate.

Hope this clarifies things for you, but of course please feel free to inquire further!

Here is another thought...Sites is housed in Google Drive and is a tool I've used in collaboration with others to share websites and supporting documents from drive. You can even create a Google Site from within a Google Drive Folder. Google sites may be shared publicly or shared and published to a selected group of collaborators.

Ms. Drasby I do in fact have quite a few Google Sites in use. While there are plenty of better web development tools, Sites are quite convenient so I use them.

Thanks also for your previous suggestion URL tool for Drive which I will look into vs glink.

Yes Google Sites is a good idea...
And I want to add some more in this direction.

This is about creating a bookmark page you can manage in a team for a project or globally.

You need...
a Google form to submit new Bookmarks
a Google Sheet, where your Bookmarks are stored
an Awesome Table view to create your UI
a GSite where you embed it
a shared GDrive folder, where you store your bookmark site so your team members can search and find it in their Drive.

You will find more detailed info and help on the linked page. But if you have problems, please do not hesitate to come back here to ask your questions.

Best regards

It is strange that we even have to talk about this. URL links are implemented within every major OS as a drag and drop feature so that you can have files and website links to documents mixed together. For instance, I want my students to find all of the resources that they need on a given topic in one drive folder. As the reviews of Glinks note, enabling this feature presents serious security vulnerabilities. Worse yet, it does not work in a collaborative environment unless other users also install this same app. It should be trivial to backup a link from windows or MacOS into a Google folder. Instead, you're basically forced to create a document like a PDF or site that contains a single link.

Greetings User 6633672607813542075 and Welcome to Google Drive Help Community 😀

Unfortunately educators are going to be restricted due to maintaining privacy and FERPA compliance.
The best way to share weblinks with students is through a collaborative G Suite APP which provides both the link and a visual for the students to access.

If your school  has a G Suite for Edu Account then I recommended trying to use either Google Classroom or Google Sites for this purpose.

As a fellow educator I'd be more than happy to answer any further question you may have about this topic.

We have a Moodle implementation here, but I am also familiar with Google's offerings. FERPA is not an issue in my case because I only share static content. No student work or graded work is posted in these folders.

You could just make a google doc in the folder filled with urls. It's not directly adding them to the folders but its a pretty simple way around the problem without adding extensions.

Reads like you're looking for a Google App version of Evernote?

That would be handy as an app in Gsuite.

There is a Save to Google Drive extension from the Google Drive Team if that helps - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/save-to-google-drive/gmbmikajjgmnabiglmofipeabaddhgne

It saves webpages to a folder on your Drive and from there you can organize and share them. It does strip the stylesheet from the save sites though.

All of these suggestions are workarounds to something that should be as simple as clicking the saved .url file in Drive and have it open in Chrome.

Is this a major technological issue? It's amazing to me that Google hasn't figured this out by now. There are posts about this going back 10 years!

The way I do it: on the Google Drive folder sync on computer (not the one visible on browser) I add a shortcut and so the URL I want to access. That's it. The bad about this method is that you need to have the Google Drive Sync installed on the computer.
After you do it and look at the browser you can see the name of the given with .url extension.
It works - and again the question remains: why there's no such way to do it on the browser? So basic.
Glink seems not to be working.
