Unable to reinstall Drive

A while ago I started having issue with my Drive desktop app - it stopped syncing and would start a new "empty" instance of the app every few seconds, causing loss of focus for the active application and populating the tray bar with Drive icons that would disappear when hovered over. Because I couldn't find help for the issue online, I decided to reinstall.

After uninstalling and attempting to start up the install file again, the following message appeared: "A partially deleted previous installation was detected. You must reboot your machine before you can install this product." I rebooted multiple times, but each time the same pop up came up, to my chagrin.

How do I reinstall Drive now and make the app usable again?

(Just in case: Backup & Sync has been uninstalled before the original install of Drive.)

You haven't mentioned the legacy Drive folder or the DriveFS folder, either of which may be causing the problem.
  1. Exit Drive for desktop
  2. Clear files cached on your computer
    • Go to: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Google\
    • Delete DriveFS and Drive If it is present
    • Drive is the redundant folder from Backup and Sync
  3. Restart the computer to clear any cached settings
