Backup&Sync slows down Finder on brand new MacBook. Bring back Google Drive for Desktop!

If I have Backup and Sync on, my finder slows down tremendously. I take a screenshot and it only appears on the desktop literally 5 seconds later. Thats a long time. When I'm saving/exporting files from apps, the files show up in my Finder much later which makes me question if they were saved or not. I waste so much time waiting to make sure files are there. I also cannot eject my external drives if its in the middle of a sync and there is no progress bar to even show me that a sync is in progress. I never had this issue with Google Drive for Desktop. It worked quietly and quickly in the background. For now I uninstalled it and have to manually back-up. This is unacceptable. We expect the highest quality from Google. But you disappoint. Bring back Google Drive for Desktop until you solve your issues.

First a few comments, then I will post the Send Feedback process so you can put your comments into the official feedback queue for the developers.

The changes made to the original Drive application that was then renamed to Backup & Sync will not be moved backwards, nor would more than 1 app be created. You seem to have some good reasons for having at least some of the older functionality back. Again, use the send feedback mechanism below to get those comments noticed.

Be advised that alot of applications around the world are being .... reworked ... furiously to try to prevent hackers from compromising people's computers via the 2 recently announced threats. These threats are very real and affect just about every device on the planet. One of the bugs discovered is a hardware bug and the only way to prevent it being triggered is to change how all browsers/apps/etc use some advanced performance tricks in the hardware. The change is to essentially kill use of those performance enhancements. Many companies have stated that this will affect users with up to 30+% performance hit- depending on their system. The hit cannot be prevented, and the hardware bug requires fundamental changes to most CPUs. The changes to the apps/browser/etc to prevent using these features are being rolled out by all the apps as fast as possible. I cannot state that this is the cause of your current issue, but if it hasn't already affected you it will at some point in the future. (PS: the crippling of these efficiency tricks will most impact parallel operations).

The best way to send any feedback to the developers is to use the Send Feedback option of the B&S app. This would also be by far the most efficient. The Send Feedback option places your comments in a queue to be reviewed, and if appropriate actioned, by the Google staff. Since there are many thousands of posts per day to the forums, it isn't unusual for developers and even Google staff to not see every one.

1) Click the B&S Cloud icon in your Taskbar/Notification area
2) Select the 3 dots, which takes you to Settings
3) Select Send Feedback - usually 3rd from the top

Thanks. I sent the feedback. It is unfortunate though that I am forced to avoid using Backup & Sync until its an actually functioning product.

Well, it actually is the old Drive program with new features and bug fixes plus a rename.

It's been out for about 6+ months now.

Works fine every day on my setups, 4 total now, but most only sync between updates to 20K-100K files.

You can disable the Finder Extension.  Unfortunately I'm unsure if this is bug in High Sierra or in the app itself, as I've read some other applications that use the Finder Extension API may also be similarly affected.  Regardless I've filed a bug with the team for further investigation.

You can disable it by:
1. Going to System Preferences -> Extensions
2. Unchecking the Backup and Sync Finder extension.

You may need to do this for all extensions there for your screenshotting to work again.

Alternatively you can go to Preferences -> Settings and uncheck "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" to specify the application to never load the Finder integration again.

Edit: updated after some investigation

Thanks Rishi!

Any word from Apple on when a fix might be forthcoming? Also, on whether it triggers only under certain conditions or any time the API extension is used?

I'm not entirely sure this is an issue in High Sierra or in the application at the moment.  I've found some other apps have a similar issue while others do not.   I've filed a bug with the team for investigation into this further.  Thanks for bringing this to attention.

With the Finder extension enabled screenshots take ages to appear on my desktop. I've disabled it many times but it reenables itself regularly so its a constant battle. I will try also disabling it in the app's Preferences > Settings and see if that helps.I would like to be able to right click to share items from the desktop but its not worth the issues.
