New Backup and Sync Google Drive Error D41D8CD9 and other issues

So that others know, during setup of the new Backup and Sync Google Drive Error D41D8CD9 is cause by GD not being able to sync the Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders when the users computer is on a domain controller with active directory, that has a group policy that redirects the users Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders to a shared network folder on the server. But Error D41D8CD9 does not tell you that.

During install the default is for GD to have Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders checked off, if you deselect and reselect these options, then and only then does GD display a popup message that says "The folder documents can't be synced. Please select a folder on an NTFS drive that is not mounted over a network."

So this means the Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders must be on a local hard drive.

Here are some other observations you might want to be aware of.

- After installing GD, requires a computer restart.

- If you have Google 2-Step Verification enabled on your account, during sign in, the Prompt to sign in does not work, you need to use anther option like receive code via SMS, or use an Authenticator app code.

- The install does not put a shortcut to the GD app on your desktop, you need to find it under all programs.

- GD defaults to uploading photos in Original quality, which will could towards your storage, I think it should default to High quality, which is free unlimited storage. At least is says this, you just need to make sure you read and understand it.

William, I am having this issue but am unable to "...deselect these options..." as I appear to be in an endless loop, i.e., I try to start the program and before I can get to the preferences, the error message pops. Am I missing something?Thanks,Bill...

This is the same problem I have. The computer I want to sync, I do not need to sync the Folders my employer already have synced into the teamdisk for work. So I want to just be able to sync the folders I use as my "private" folders, and be able to work on them offline. I managed to get one user synced, but this was the wrong user (an old google-account on this machine), and I had to disconnect that account. Now, I can't get to connect the right account due to that same error. And I have no intentions to sync either my desktop, my work-space documents or my pictures for offline use. I just want 2 spesific folders synced that I can only access when online at the moment. So is this possible to do with this tool?

Je třeba se přihlásit pod lokálním účtem - poté proběhne instalace i nastavení v pořádku.Ale po dalším přihlášení do domény to ukazuje stejnou chybu.Tady zřejmě pomůže pouze Google.

This is a disaster, none of my files in Google drive are syncing and back up and sync will not open on my PC's.You have ruined the best application Google has ever made with this horrid update. How do I reinstall Google Drive, the new app is useless and does not have a folder in Windows Explorer?

This is an issue for me, too.  And I don't have my Desktop, Documents nor Pictures on a network drive.  Frustrating!  Windows 7.  Backup and sync version 3.35.6251.4621.

I've just joined google drive - and I'm getting this error.  The cause?  Google Backup and Sync appears to be a 32 bit application.  For every 150,000 files it counts - it uses 1GB of ram.  And when it hits 4GB, it runs out of memory, and crashes.I've been trying for a week to get the support team to do something about it.  No luck so far, just lots and lots and lots of escalation points where I'm asked to reinstall "Google Backup and Sync" (as Google Drive is no longer available for business users). So, based on my averages, once it finds ~1.4 million files, it will just crash.  It does seem to be syncing 100 files at a time between crashes.  No idea if they were smart enough to release the memory once the files are synced up.

Also note, that estimate is VERY rough.  Sometimes 75k files uses 1GB of RAM.  Sometimes 350k files uses 1GB of RAM.

Hi Lloyd,

Thanks, we are looking at improving this.  The next version should have more improvements, but will continue on optimizing the application for memory.

Just to clarify: I am trying to use Backup & Sync on a corporate computer. Would it not be possible to use it? Or are you also trying to improve this error currently? when should we expect the improvment will be issued?

To be honest, optimization isn't good enough, and the problem will happen regardless of what Google Drive software you have installed. You can find the error message from the crash here: %appdata%\local\google\drive\user_default\last_errorThe new Google Backup and Sync is the worst offender, crashing with several error messages including D414D8CD9 (exceptions.MemoryError) after accessing ~ 900k files. The former applications Google Drive & Google Drive Sync (for Business) crash with the error D41D (exceptions.MemoryError) but I found they were slightly better on the memory side.Searching on here you can see it has been an ongoing issue with plenty of statements from staff saying optimizations are coming and even that millions of files can be handled without issue.  The truth of the matter is, no it cannot.  And no optimization will be good enough.  I cannot sync 900k files - with over 3 million in total - and we are a pretty small business.  The optimization would need to be a 400-500% decrease in memory use in order for us to finish syncing and be able to continue to grow using it for our business needs - and even then, there are much bigger businesses that would still be excluded. The root cause has little to do with optimization, and more to do with the fact they keep the list active in memory the whole time (dropbox does not, that is why it doesn't have this issue), and that they built it using 32bit.  The reason they don't create a 64bit build is because they don't want to, they know it will double the RAM use (the way 64bit data needs to be handled), because they would need to change some data structures which they also capped at 32bit, and because they still haven't figured out how to use a DB that isn't in RAM.  I'm not sure if it is a skill issue, or a willingness issue.  But I'm sure that businesses are not their highest priority for support, but the regular joe that buys 1TB of space (and actually only uses 5MB).It will always crash when it reaches 4GB of RAM for you, which with any cloud solution will happen at some point as you grow.  It is just compounded by the fact they put no error messages in the software to really let you know what is going on.

For me the problem was linked to kaspersky.  Try adding In Kaspersky -> Additional -> Threats & Exclusions -> Specify Trusted Applications, an Exclusion for the executable/service(s) of Google B&S -> Do not scan encrypted traffic.https://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?/topic/388556-kis-seems-to-block-google-backup-sync-from-launching/
