Save, edit & share Microsoft Office files

You can use Microsoft Office files in Google Drive in three ways on your computer:

To sync files directly from your computer to Google Drive, download Google Drive for Mac or PC.

Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office

You can install the Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office. The plugin works with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (2010, 2013, and 2016). You can also use Office 365 if you subscribe and install it on your computer.

After you install the plug-in, you'll see "Google Drive" in the Office menu bar.

Note: The plug-in does not work with Office for Mac.

Install the plug-in

  1. In a web browser, go to the plug-in page and click Download.
  2. Double-click DriveForOffice.exe and click Run.
  3. Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
  4. On startup, at the Welcome screen, click Get Started, then sign in to your Google Account.
  5. On the Authorization page, click Accept.

The plug-in is now able to use your Google Drive documents.

Uninstall the Google Drive plug-in

  1. On your Windows computer, go to Start and then Control Panel and then Uninstall a program.
  2. In the programs list, click Google Drive plug-in.
  3. Click Uninstall in the menu bar.
  4. Restart your Office application.
Open a file from Google Drive
  1. Open an Office program.
  2. Click File and then Google Drive and then Open from Google Drive.
  3. In the dialog, click the file you want to open.
    • Note: If you select a file saved as Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, it will open in the corresponding app in a separate window.
  4. To open a file, click Select.
Share a file
  1. In an Office program, open a file from Google Drive.
  2. At the top, click Google Drive.
  3. Under "Drive options," click Share.
  4. Enter the names, email addresses, or Google Groups you want to share the file with.

The people you share with will get an email to let them know you shared a file or folder with them.

Save a file to Drive

  1. At the top of the app, click Google Drive.
  2. Click Save to Drive.

Copy a file

  1. At the top of the app, click Google Drive.
  2. Click Save As.
  3. Type in a new name for the file.
  4. Click OK.
Rename or move a file in Google Drive

Rename a file

  1. In an Office program, open a file from Google Drive.
  2. At the top, click Google Drive.
  3. Click Rename.
  4. Type a new name for the file.
  5. Click OK.

Move an Office file saved in Google Drive

When you move a file into a shared folder, it is shared with everyone who can view the folder.

  1. In an Office program, open a file from Google Drive.
  2. At the top, click Google Drive.
  3. Click Move.
  4. In the dialog, choose a different folder.
  5. Click Select.
Microsoft Outlook

If you use Microsoft Outlook, you can send and save attachments with the Google Drive plug-in.

Send a file from Drive

  1. At the top of the app, click New email.
  2. Click Insert files using Drive.
    • To send as a link, click Insert as Drive Link.
    • To attach the file, click Insert as Attachment.
  3. Choose the file you want to send.
  4. Click Select.

Send a local attachment

  1. At the top, click New email.
  2. Click Attach File.
  3. Choose the file you want to send from your computer.
  4. Click OK.
  5. You'll be prompted to save the file to Drive.

Note: If your file is too large to be sent through email, you can send a link to the file in Google Drive.

Save an attachment to Drive

  1. At the top of the app, click Google Drive.
  2. Click Save attachments to Drive.
Sign out of the Google Drive plug-in
  1. Click Google Drive.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Account.
  4. Click Sign out.

Note: To use Google Drive with Microsoft Office, sign in again with your Google Account.
