View and upload other files on your iPhone and iPad

This article describes the latest version of the Drive app for iOS. To get the latest version, download an update from the App Store.

Viewing different file types

With the Drive app on your iPhone or iPad, you can view any file you've uploaded to your Drive, as long as it's in a supported format. Every time you open something, it’ll update to the latest version of the file. If a collaborator is actively working on something, though, you won’t see updates being made in real time.

The Drive app supports the following formats:

  • Google documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings
  • All Microsoft Office formats
  • TXT and PDF files
  • Images (JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIF)
  • Movies (MOV, AVI, MP4)

To view a file type that Drive doesn't support, you'll need to open it in another app outside of Drive.

  1. Tap the file's name in your Drive.
  2. Tap the button in the top-right corner of the next screen.
  3. Select Open In...
  4. Choose from a list of relevant apps already installed on your device.
  5. To return to the Drive app, press your device's Home button and reopen the app. Updates you made in other apps will not sync back to Drive.

Uploading photos and videos

The Drive app lets you upload photos and videos directly from your iPhone and iPad.

To upload photos or videos that are already stored on your device:

  1. Tap the Create button in the top-right corner of your screen.
  2. Select Upload Photo or Video.
  3. Tap a single photo or video in your camera roll to upload it to Drive.

To instantly upload a photo or video after taking it with your device’s camera:

  1. Tap the Create button in the top-right corner of your screen.
  2. Select Use Camera.
  3. Take a photo or video. (Don't worry, you can retake it if you don't get it quite right the first time).
  4. When finished, tap Use.
  5. The photo or video will then be uploaded to your Drive. Find it in the Uploads section, which will show the latest files you've uploaded to Drive.
Make sure that your device's settings allow photo uploads to Drive. Tap the Settings app, then tap Privacy. Tap Photos, and make sure that the On/Off switch next to Google Drive is turned On.
