View and upload files on your iPhone/iPad

You can view a file you've uploaded in the latest version of the Drive app, as long as it's in a format that works with Drive. Each time you open a file, it updates to the latest version. If someone else is working on a file, you won’t see changes as they’re being made.

View different file types

The Drive app works with the following formats:

  • Google documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings
  • All Microsoft Office formats
  • TXT and PDF files
  • Images (JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIF)
  • Movies (MOV, AVI, MP4)

To view a file type that doesn’t work with Drive, you'll need to open it in another app.

View files in another app
  1. Open the Drive app.
  2. Touch the name of the file or touch the info icon Activity Information.
  3. Touch Open In.
  4. Choose from a list of apps already installed on your device. If you don’t see an app, go to the App Store and download an app that support the file type.
  5. To return to the Drive app, press your device's Home button and reopen the app. Updates you made in other apps will not sync back to Drive.
