Change your sharing settings

To control what others can do with a file or folder you created, use stricter settings for specific documents.

Stop sharing a file or folder
  1. Go to drive.google.com or a Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  2. Select a file or folder.
  3. In Drive: At the top, click Share Share.
    In Docs, Sheets, or Slides: At the top right, click Share.
  4. At the bottom right of the "Share with others" window, click Advanced.
  5. Next to the person you want to stop sharing with, click Remove Close.
  6. Click Save changes.
Delete a file link

When you delete a link to a file, only you and people you share the file with directly will still have access.

  1. Sign in to Google Drive or a Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  2. Open the file or folder.
  3. In the top right, click Share or Share Share.
  4. Click the Down arrow next to "Anyone with the link."
  5. Click More.
  6. Select "Off - Specific people."
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click Done.
Restrict sharing

By default, people who can edit your shared files and folders can also:

  • Change sharing settings
  • Share the file and folder with other people
  • Copy, print, or download the file

If you don't want people to change sharing settings, copy, print, or download a file:

  1. Go to drive.google.com or a Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  2. Select a file.
  3. In Google Drive: At the top, click Share Share.
    In Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides: In the top right, click Share.
  4. At the bottom right of the "Share with others" window, click Advanced.
  5. Change one or both of these settings:
    • Next to "Prevent editors from changing access and adding new people," check the box.
    • Next to "Disable options to download, print, and copy for commenters and viewers," check the box. Note: This setting does not apply to folders or people with edit access.
  6. Click Save changes.
Change the owner of a file or folder

You will only see this setting option if you're the current file owner. The person you want to transfer ownership to must already be invited to the file. You can only transfer ownership of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms.

  1. Go to drive.google.com or a Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  2. Select a file or folder.
  3. In Google Drive: at the top, click Share Share.
    In Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides: In the top right, click Share.
  4. At the bottom right of the "Share with others" window, click Advanced.
  5. Next to the name of the person you want to make the owner, click the Down arrow .
  6. From the list, select Is owner.
  7. Click Save changes.

Note: If you use Google apps through work or school, you can't transfer ownership to someone outside of your domain.

Set an expiration date

Important: This setting is only available if you're using an account through work, school, or another group.

Expiration dates cannot be set for people with edit access:

  • If you set an expiration for someone with edit access, their access changes to "Can comment."
  • If you change someone's access to "Can edit," their access expiration will be removed.
  1. Go to drive.google.com or a Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  2. Select a file or folder.
  3. In Drive: At the top, click Share Share.
    In Docs, Sheets, or Slides: In the top right, click Share.
  4. At the bottom right of the "Share with others" window, click Advanced.
  5. Under "Who has access," find the person or group whose access time you want to limit. If they're not listed, type their email address in the "Invite People" box and click Send.
  6. Next to the name of the person or group, click the Down arrow .
  7. From the list, select Set expiration.
  8. Next to "Access expires," click the number of days to change the expiration date. Dates must be within one year of the current date.
  9. Click Save changes.
