Change Google Drive settings

You can change a number of settings in Google Drive on the web, your mobile device, or your Mac/PC.

On the web

To change your settings:

  1. Go to
  2. Click Settings .
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • Convert uploads: Convert uploaded files to Google files.
    • Language: Change your preferred language for all Google products.
    • Offline: Sync files to your computer so you can edit them without an Internet connection.
    • Density: Change the way your files are displayed in Google Drive.
    • Create a Google Photos folder: Put all of your Google Photos in a folder in “My Drive”.
    • Manage apps: See all the apps connected to your Google Drive.

Google Drive settings carry over to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides home screens automatically. To change a setting from the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screens:

  1. Click Menu.
  2. Click Settings.

On mobile

To change your settings:

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • Clear cache: Remove all cached documents.
    • Cache size: Select your cache size.
    • Enable encryption: Encrypt documents on your mobile device.
    • Transfer files only over Wi-Fi: Upload and update files only when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

On a Mac/PC

To change your settings:

  1. Click Google Drive google drive desktop icon.
    • On a Mac, the icon is in the menu bar at the top right of your desktop screen.
    • On a PC, the icon is in the taskbar in the bottom right of your desktop screen.
  2. In the top right, click Menu .
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • Sync options
      • Everything in my Drive: Sync everything in "My Drive."
      • Only these folders: Check the boxes next to the folders that you want to sync.
    • Account
      • Disconnect account: Connect your Google Drive desktop folder to another Google Account (not recommended).
      • Get more storage: Buy additional Google Drive storage.
    • Advanced
      • Proxy settings: Switch between "Auto-detect" and "Direct connection."
      • Bandwidth settings: Choose how much bandwidth Drive leaves for other programs on your computer (in kilobytes per second) or choose "Don’t limit" to choose the fastest rate.
      • Start Google Drive on system startup: Launch Google Drive and start syncing files to your desktop.
      • Send crash reports and usage statistics to Google: Send information to Google to help us prioritize features and improvements we should work on.
      • Show file sync status icons and right click menu: See a checkmark next to a file that has successfully synced to your desktop.
      • Misc: Show file sync status icons.
