About the Squarespace purchase of Google Domains registrations

We want you to be aware of important upcoming changes to your Google Domains account. On June 15, 2023, Squarespace announced its intent to purchase domain registrations and related customer accounts from Google Domains.

What is happening?

On June 15, 2023, Google entered into a definitive agreement with Squarespace, where they intend to purchase all domain registrations and related customer accounts from Google Domains. Now that the transaction between Google and Squarespace has closed, you're a customer of Squarespace. Google Domains will no longer offer new domain registrations. Until your domain(s) are migrated to Squarespace, a process that will happen in the next few months, you can continue to manage your existing domain(s) at Google Domains. If you wish to purchase a new domain now try Squarespace. This is an affiliate link. If you make a purchase from Squarespace, we may earn a commission.

What does this mean for you as a customer?

There’s no immediate impact on your Google Domains account and there is nothing you need to do at this time. Now that the transaction between Google and Squarespace has closed, you’ve become a customer of Squarespace, and your domain account is owned and, after a transition period, will be managed by Squarespace. At the time of transition, Squarespace will automatically manage related Google Workspace services, subject to limited exceptions. If any further action is needed, Squarespace will contact you directly.

What happens to your domain?

For customers who purchased a domain directly from Google Domains

Now that the transaction has closed, you’re a Squarespace customer. For now, your domain will continue to be managed through Google Domains, with Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service continuing to apply.

Beginning soon, there will be a transition period during which customers, and if applicable, billing info will be migrated over time to Squarespace, subject to limited exceptions. After this transition, Squarespace will manage your domain account. This includes DNS, WHOIS settings, and domain name renewal. If you have a Google Workspace subscription billed by Google Domains, billing, and support services, your subscription will be transitioned to Squarespace. We’ll work with Squarespace to make the transition as seamless as possible for you.

Effective upon the transfer of your customer and billing info to Squarespace, Squarespace Terms of Service will be binding and enforceable and your data will be governed by the Squarespace Privacy Policy. You’ll continue to be able to move your domains to another registrar prior to such transfer or at any time thereafter, subject to restrictions set by registry operators and your gaining registrar.

For customers who purchased a domain in the Google Workspace sign-up flow
Now that the transaction has closed, you’re a Squarespace customer. Beginning soon, there will be a transition period during which customer info associated with your domain will be migrated over time, subject to limited exceptions. After this transition, Squarespace will manage your domain account. This includes DNS, WHOIS settings, and domain name renewal. We’ll work with Squarespace to make the transition as seamless as possible for you. Billing for your domain will continue to be managed by Google Workspace directly, even after your domain is transitioned to Squarespace.

Will your domain stop working at any point?

Your domain name registration and DNS delegation won’t be affected by the migration to Squarespace. After your domain has been migrated to Squarespace, you can manage additional services through their management console.

What happens to your Google Workspace service & G Suite purchased through Google Domains?

Now that the transaction between Google and Squarespace has closed, you’ve become a customer of Squarespace. The billing and support services for Google Workspace, including G Suite subscriptions currently billed by Google Domains will be managed by Squarespace. Beginning soon, there will be a transition period during which customer and billing information will be migrated over time, subject to limited exceptions. After which, Squarespace will manage and bill your Workspace subscription previously billed by Google Domains. We’ll work with Squarespace to make the transition as seamless as possible for you. This does not impact any Workspace subscription billed directly by Google Workspace or other resellers of Workspace.

What do you need to do?

There’s nothing you need to do right now. You can manage your domain at Google Domains until it is transitioned, after which you’ll manage it in a Squarespace account. Further details will be provided at transition time. Google Domains will work with Squarespace to make the transition as seamless as possible for you. What happens next?

Beginning soon your domain name will transition from Google Domains to Squarespace. The transition process will roll out gradually and is expected to take several months. Prior to your domain’s transition, you’ll manage your domain using Google Domains and Google’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy will continue to apply. After your domain is transitioned to Squarespace, you’ll be able to manage your domain with them and Squarespace’s Privacy Policy will apply to your data. What will happen to your billing data?

To ensure that this transition is as seamless as possible for you, your encrypted billing data will, where applicable, be securely migrated to Squarespace and their PCI-compliant payment processor.

What are your alternatives if you don’t want to transition to Squarespace?

This announcement doesn’t change your ability to transfer your domain to any other registrar at any time, subject to restrictions set by registry operators and the gaining registrar. You’ll continue to have the ability to move your domain to another registrar prior to such transfer or at any time thereafter.
