Issues setting up Gmail Custom Address with your domain

If you have had email for your domain before, there are several conflicts that can get in the way of configuring your Gmail custom address.

Here is how to fix the most common conflicts that can interfere with your Gmail Custom Address:

Your domain has a current G Suite account:

You cannot set up a Gmail Custom Address on a domain that has a current G Suite account.

  1. Remove G Suite from your domain:
  2. After removing your domain or cancelling G Suite, follow the steps below to check if there is a G Suite synthetic record remaining and remove it.

Existing G Suite synthetic record:

  1. Log into Google Domains.

  2. Click on the DNS tab for the domain that has the conflict.
  3. Scroll down to Synthetic records and look for a G Suite synthetic record.
  4. If you have one, you can delete it.

Note: If your G Suite account still exists, make sure you want to delete or suspend it before deleting the synthetic record. You can delete or suspend your G Suite account at the Admin Console.

Resource record conflicts:

  1. If you haven't already, log into Google Domains.

  2. Click on the DNS tab for the domain that has the conflict.
  3. Scroll down to Resource records and look for any of the following records.
    • root (@) MX record
    • DKIM TXT record with key "._domainkey"
    • DMARC TXT record with key "_dmarc"
    • root (@) spf TXT record
    • root (@) spf SPF record
  4. Click Delete beside the record to delete it.

Not using Google's name servers:

  1. Log into Google Domains.

  2. Click on the DNS tab for the domain that has the conflict.
  3. Scroll down to Name servers.
  4. Select Use the Google Domains name servers and click Save.
