Renew a domain

You can take steps to prevent your domain from expiring and prevent you from potentially losing your domain registration. You have 2 ways you can renew your domain:

  • Auto-renew: Turn on a setting that automatically renews your domain every year within a month of when your domain expires. Google Domains charges your payment method when the auto-renewal occurs.
  • Add years: Take manual steps to add years to your domain registration period (up to your domain ending’s maximum registration period).

If you have manually renewed your domain while you have auto-renew turned on, Google Domains will automatically cancel the auto-renew for that year, because your domain has already been renewed. When we cancel any purchase, we automatically send you a notice.

No action should be necessary on your part.

Important: If your domain has expired and is outside of the renewal grace period (typically 30 days), you must take steps to restore your domain and pay an additional restoration fee.

How to turn on auto-renew

To turn on auto-renew, do the following:

  1. Sign in to Google Domains.
  2. Select the name of your domain.
  3. Open the menu Menu.
  4. Click Registration settings.
  5. Scroll down and ensure the Auto-renew switch is in the on position.

After these steps, Google Domains prompts you to confirm your purchase. Google Domains doesn’t charge your account until the auto-renewal process actually occurs, within a few days of your expiration date.

Tip: Auto-renew only works while the credit card information in your account is valid. Make sure to update your information if you get a new credit card.

How to add years to your registration

To add years to your registration, do the following:

  1. Sign in to Google Domains.
  2. Select the name of your domain.
  3. Open the menu Menu.
  4. Click Registration settings.
  5. Scroll down to the section about auto-renew.
  6. Click Add years and select the number of years you’d like to add.

After these steps, Google Domains prompts you to confirm your purchase. Google Domains charges your account when you finalize this purchase.

Tip: The typical maximum registration period is 10 years. The registration period varies by domain ending, and some domains only allow auto-renew. Check the reference of domain ending details to confirm details for your domain.
