Notification

Google has closed an agreement for Squarespace, Inc. to acquire all domain name registrations from Google Domains. Squarespace is the registrar of record for your domain and the Squarespace terms of service apply; however, Google will manage your domain during a transition period. Following a transition period, your domain will be transitioned to Squarespace and, upon transfer, your data will be governed by Squarespace's privacy policyLearn more about the agreement.

Transfer from Google Domains to another registrar

You can transfer your domain to:

  • Another Google Domains user
  • Your own account with a different registrar
  • A different user with a different registrar

If you transfer a domain to another account in Google Domains, you or someone else must change the domain. Learn how to share domain management.

Important: Most domain transfers take up to five days to complete. If you want to cancel a transfer before it's registered with the new registrar, you must do so before the transfer ends.

Transfer restrictions

Before you start the transfer-out process, note the following restrictions:

  • If Google Domains has a pending admin action against your domain, you must fix the matter before you can transfer.
  • Registry operators and other registrars may place restrictions on transfers that have been purchased in the last 60 days based on ICANN policy permissions. Work with your new registrar to troubleshoot any issues.

For requirements specific to your domain name ending, refer to the domain ending details.

Tips for when your transfer a domain out

Know the different roles

Each step of the transfer process needs action by different individuals and entities:

  • Domain owner: Refers to you at Google Domains.
    • In 'Registration settings', prepare the domain for transfer.
    • Update the contact info
    • Unlock the domain
    • Get the authorisation code.
  • New Domain owner: Refers to you or the person who you're transferring the domain name to at the new registrar's site.
    • Give the authorisation code to the new registrar.
    • Pay for another year of registration.
  • New registrar: Gives the authorisation code to the domain's registry.
  • Registry: Asks Google to check if the registrant (WHOIS contact) wants to transfer the domain.
  • Google: Approves the domain transfer. Sends a transfer confirmation email to the registrant (WHOIS contact) for approval.
  • New registrar: Tells the registrant (WHOIS contact) that the transfer is done. The new domain owner might have to re-enter and verify the contact info for the registration or re-verify existing info.

Understand WHOIS info and transfers

If private registration or redaction is turned on during the transfer-out process, the new registrar won't receive the info for the:

  • Registrant
  • Admin
  • Tech contact

For domain names with full WHOIS published, this info might or might not be transferred depending on the new registrar's processes.

Upon completion of the transfer, you must re-enter and verify this info with the new registrar. This process might yield a change to the registrant, admin or tech contact provided for the registration.

Minimise disruptions

When your transfer is done, the Google Domains' services stop, such as:

  • Email forwarding
  • Domain forwarding
  • Name servers
  • Resource records
  • Private registration

The stoppage could affect your website and online presence. To reduce any disruptions, note the following:

  • Contact your web and Domain Name System (DNS) hosting provider.
  • If you use Google Domains' name servers, re-configure your name servers and resource records with your new registrar.
  • To continue using any Google products and services with your domain, you must verify your domain registration.
