"Automatically correct spelling" option not available in Docs

I have a Google Workspaces account and the "Automatically correct spelling" option is not available in the Docs.

It is available in Docs on another personal Google account I have and it is found under Tools> Preferences.

But that option simply doesn't show up under in that place that it should be. It isn't there for this account. Why? Where is it? Is it that this type of account doesn't have it?

I have been banging my head against a wall trying to figure out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, James,

The features in Workspace are not the same as in personal accounts -- Workspace has more feature-rich options.

When you go to Tools > Preferences you should see "Show Smart Compose suggestions." If that isn't what you are looking for, go to Tools > Spelling & grammar > Show spelling suggestions.

Do either of these cover what you need?

Thank you again.

I have ensured that "Show Smart Composed suggestions" is enabled. And that "Show spelling suggestions" is enabled, too.

I cleared my cache and restarted my computer.

I created a blank doc and typed some words and it shows the errors in red and blue but it is still not automatically correcting them as I type. Incidentally, it is showing the grammar errors in blue and the spelling errors in red. Please see below...

Hi, James,

Oops! You're right about the blue and red underlines (blue grammar; red for spelling). In order for the automatic spelling corrections to work, you might need to have more context in your document. Try typing a common proper noun with a mistake in it, such as "Wasshington". When you press the space bar after you type in the proper noun, does it automatically change to the correct spelling?

No still the same...
James, please answer the following questions:
  • Which operating system and version/number are you using?
  • Which device are you using?
  • Which browser (and browser version number) are you using?

I am on a Google Pixelbook
Chrome OS Version 88.0.4324.109 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Edit:
But I am also having the same issue on my Macbook Pro on Chrome on macOS  88.0.4324.150

Thanks, James. I have the same setup. :)

To be honest, this feature works intermittently for me, but it does work (at least some of the time). The only thing I can think of that might be causing some interference for you is a conflicting browser extension. Do you have many extensions installed? Could you disable (or uninstall) all of them, clear the cache in Chrome, and reboot your Pixelbook to see if that makes any difference?

Thanks for your help Jo, it is baffling me, too. I have disable extensions and cleared cache and restarted and it's still doing it. And across devices and platforms.

It's frustrating because this seems like such a simple, basic thing that word processors have had figured out for a long time. I don't know why it is so cumbersome for Google Docs.

Do you know- is there a way to get formal support from Google? Workspaces is a service I pay for but I can't seem to find a way to contact support.

Thank you!
Hi, James,

Here is a page that should be helpful to you: Contact Google Workspace support.

If you aren't the administrator of your account, you will have to locate the person in your organization who is, as they will be the only person authorized to reach out to Google support on behalf of your account.

If you're able, please report back after you've contacted support. I'm curious about this issue myself!

James - could you try logging in to an Incognito window and see if that works?
This is an odd one - intermittetn bugs are always difficult to chase down.
It happens to me, too, Gill, even in incognito. The feature simply doesn't work consistently all the time.

Thanks Jo. I've just tested it myself again (I do see the option on my private accounts) and agree that it isn't working, at least today - but see below **.

James - if you haven't already please report this via Help-Help Docs Improve.

**I have just found something interesting** - if you disable the option to Show spelling suggestions under Tools-Spelling and grammar then the auto-correct magically starts working!
Hmmm. I didn't have that experience, Gill (I just tested that out). I'll keep playing with it, but that didn't make any difference for me. (But thank you for digging into this!)
