can you set the formatting with the formula bar? 0 Recommended Answers 3 Replies 0 Upvotes

Ok so basically I have a google sheet that has thousands of rows and I am updating it with the google sheets API via the python package gspread.
So I would like to update the formatting with the API but it seems I would have to do that cell by cell so that would take hundreds of API calls and the google sheets API has a limit of 100 requests per 100 seconds so my program would take hours to run.
But if I can somehow update the formatting with the formula bar that would allow me to update the sheet and the formatting at the same time.
If there is a way to do this that would be awesome also if there is a better way to update the formatting that I could use that would be awesome.
Thanks.

Hello Jared,

Have  you looked at Conditional Formatting in Sheets? Using CF, you create rules that evaluate the values in cells and apply formatting to cells that satisfy the rule. A simple rule would be "Format cell whose value is >100" You can create custom formulas as well for more complex evaluations.

I don't know if CF will help you, as I'm unfamiliar with the workflow you describe. CF rules look at the values and make their determination. That's all I know!

hi Jared,

Would it be possible, for your downstream purposes, to just format a different tab that was a mirror of what the API tab was pulling?

For example lets say your tab with the API pulls is called API_Data.

On a new tab called API_Formatted, you could put this formula in cell A1:

={API_Data!A:Z}

then you could just format the entire columns using traditional formatting tools and the API_Data would all appear there with the correct formatting.

Might that work?

Matt
