I am trying to place an image behind text. Only options I see are In line, Wrap or Break text. Thx!

Hello, I am trying to place an image behind text but can't seem to find how. The only options I see are In line, Wrap Text or Break Text. It will work almost like a watermark on a document but I want it behind, I'm looking to mark some documents with my company logo. More for promotion or advertising, not security. Thanks!

Hi there,

At this time, the only way to add a watermark to a Google Docs document is to put your text into a text box via Insert > Drawing and set up the watermark as an image with a high transparency to layer over it.

How to Add a Text Box to an Image in Google Docs
  1. Paste or upload the image to your document.
  2. Click on the image to select it.
  3. Adjust the transparency by going to Image options > Transparency and moving the slider as needed.
  4. Copy the image by clicking on it and pressing Ctrl/Cmd + C.
  5. Go to Insert > Drawing.
  6. Paste the image (Ctrl/Cmd V) in the Drawing application.
  7. Select the Text tool and drag the text box to wherever you want it over the image, resizing it as needed.
  8. Type in the text you want to add, using the font of your choice.
  9. Select the blue Save & Close button.
This may be more complex than what you're seeking if you have a document that's longer than one page. The best and easiest alternative would be to convert the document to a PDF (go to File > Download as ...) and then add the watermark with a free online app, such as Watermark PDF Files, I Love PDF, or Watermark Images

To help influence future feature changes or additions in Docs, I encourage you to provide feedback about this directly to the Docs team by following these steps:
  1. Open a document.
  2. Click Help > Report a problem
  3. Enter your feedback.
Although the product team is unable to respond to individual users directly, they review this feedback regularly and use it to help improve the product over time. The more users who have this request, the more likely it is the team will make a change.

Please fix this! Its a huge disadvantage. This function is so essential, do you really want me to go back to Office after using Docs for only a month? And I don't care if here are any google employees, this issue should be sent to Google right away.
Please note that the help communities are managed by volunteer product users (this is a peer-to-peer message board), not Google employees. We can offer assistance with troubleshooting and how-to questions, but we have no control over product improvements or general issues/complaints.

You can submit your concerns via Help > Report a problem. The team reviews all feedback sent to them but is unable to respond to individual users. Google doesn't check the help forums for user feedback, so it's important that you use the in-product tool. The more users who request this capability via in-product feedback, the greater the chances are of the team considering it.

Please note that the help communities are managed by volunteer product users (this is a peer-to-peer message board), Google simply does not care. We can offer ctrl V sympathy, but we have no control over our Google Overlords.

You can submit your concerns via Help > Report a problem. The team will dutifully ignore all your sugestions. Google doesn't check the help forums for user feedback, so it's important that you learn your place in this circle of life. The more users who sacrifice their fisrt born child, the greater the chances the gods might hear your plea.

how do i put a picture behind words

If you want to send an image behind the text, first click the image, next "Arrange", then "Order", and finally "Send backward".
This works vice versa as well.

I was looking to do the same thing, but...

I wanted to put the words "UNRELEASED" or similar for Doc Control, but instead (since this isn't supported here), I had to put it in the header.  That way it was visible on every page, without having to do/undo it manually on multiple paged docs.

I use Microsoft Word if I need to use images for anything.  Google doesn't cut it in comparison.  Sadly.

All you need to do is just go to <Arrange>, hover the mouse over or click <Order>, than click on <Bring To Front>. However, before you do this, you must click the text box to be over the photo so that is has a blue outline on the text box.
