TIPS FOR POSTING
created by members of the Google Sheets Product Experts Program

TL;DR
Save time by including a Sample Sheet when you post.
Use the Sample Sheet to show how your data is set up, and to illustrate your desired result.

WELCOME!
You've decided to post a Sheets question on the Google Docs Help Forum. You want to solve your Sheets challenges quickly, and forum contributors want that too.

WHO WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?
Forum contributors are users who love to share their knowledge and help others. By consistently providing high quality help, some contributors earn a place in the Google Product Experts Program

You can recognize Product Experts by their special forum badges.

TIPS FOR POSTING
Avoid wasted cycles and get great answers quickly by following these steps:

Set up your sample
By far, the easiest way to discuss your spreadsheet question is on a live sample Sheet. The more accurately your sample reflects your real-world Sheet, the more relevant our suggestions will be.

NEW
You may post a copy of your Sheet, or you may use the new BLANK SHEET MAKER to quickly and safely build your sample for posting. In either case, the following tips apply:

Remove sensitive info
We need to see the structure, placement, and type of data you're working with, but you should not share sensitive info.

Create meaningful sample data
Create sample data that includes the variety of values you'll deal with in your real sheet. Don't oversimplify.

Provide enough sample data so we can create and test formulas. e.g.: Want summaries by month? Provide more than one month's data.

Avoid visually bland sample data like Name1, Name2.  Use realistic fictitious names. Please do not use gibberish.

Show us what you'd like to do
Use your sample Sheet to illustrate what you'd like to accomplish. If you don't know the formula, or your formulas are not working, just HAND ENTER what the results of a working formula would look like. Use empty cells alongside your data to explain why this result is correct.

AVOID the X/Y Problem
"...
in which the person asking for help obscures the real issue, X, because instead of asking directly about issue X, they ask how to solve a secondary issue, Y, which they believe will allow them to resolve issue X."

Help the volunteers who will work on your sheet
Be sure to guide us to where we should look to understand your question. If your sheet is very large or complex, remove columns and tabs that are not related to your question.

SHARE YOUR SAMPLE
There are now two options for sharing your sample.

OPTION ONE – NEW and RECOMMENDED:
Use the new BLANK SHEET MAKER. Build your sample on the Blank, then include a link to the sample in your post.

OPTION TWO – Traditional
Post a copy of your Sheet. Here are the simple steps.

Make a copy of your Sheet
Keep your original private. Choose File > Make a copy

SHARE THE SHEET
Enable "ANYONE with the link can EDIT"
Forum contributors can provide help directly on your sheet if you enable EDIT Sharing on your sheet.

To enable EDIT sharing on your sheet: (DESKTOP)

TIP: Take note - you're working to set "Anyone with the link can EDIT"
(Many posters miss this detail!)

To enable EDIT sharing on your sheet: (MOBILE)
  1. Tap the 3-dots menu .
  2. Tap "Share and Export"
  3. Enable the slider for "Link sharing"
  4. The Link is automatically copied
  5. Paste the link in your Forum post

Your G Suite organization’s policy on sharing
In the event that your organization prohibits sharing outside your domain, use the recommend BLANK SHEET MAKER to create and post your sample Sheet.

Forum etiquette
When you've received a response that answers your question, please observe these forum courtesies;
 • Leave your demo sheet shared as part of this solution's archive,
 • Click Recommend on the post that best addressed your question, and
 • Post again soon!

Thank you for investing your time in reading this post and preparing your shared sheet. We promise it was time well spent!

Thank you!
