Using Importrange when I have editing access to both sourcing doc and destination doc

It keeps on showing me that there's limited access when I'm trying to use Importrange function sourcing data from a doc that I have editing access to and transferring it to a doc that I also only have editing access to. According to Google Support it states that as long as you have editing access, you can use the Importrange function.

It looks like you don't have access to that spreadsheet.

Make sure you're logged in with the email address that has access.

Hi Angie,

Welcome to the Google Docs Editors Help Community.

Could you please share a screenshot of the error message?

Note : When you first use IMPORTRANGE between two sheets, Google Sheets will prompt you to allow access to the source sheet. Ensure that you've clicked the "Allow access" button after entering the formula. Without this, the data won't pull through.

Hi there,

#REF: "You don't have permissions to access that sheet/spreadsheet"
  • CAUSE #1: The Google Sheets IMPORTRANGE function isn't supported by Microsoft Excel files.
    • SOLUTION: Both the (source and target) files must be native Google Sheets files.
      • The IMPORTRANGE function will not work in an Excel file.
      • The IMPORTRANGE function can not be used to retrieve data from an Excel file.
      • For each of the files, go to the "File" menu. If you see the option "Save as Google Sheets", then click it to save the Excel files as native Google Sheets files, then use the new files.
      • If you want this to be supported by Microsoft Excel files then you need to contact Microsoft support, NOT Google.
  • CAUSE #2: Your Google account has not been added to the list of users that can access the source file using IMPORTRANGE.
    • SOLUTION: Ensure that your Google account added to the list of users that can access the source file. Do this by contacting the owner (if the file is owned by an individual), or the Workspace account administrator (when the file is in a Shared Drive and is therefore owned by a group, NOT by an individual).

If you have followed every word above then we will need to see proof that the files are in fact Google Sheets files and none of them are Excel files. To do that, can you please provide 2 screenshots:
  1. The first screenshot from the source file: showing the title of the file PLUS the browser URL of the file.
  2. The second screenshot from the target file: showing the title of the file PLUS clicking on the cell with the IMPORTRANGE formula so we can also see the formula bar that this file is pointing to the source file.

Here is example screenshot of what we need to see:
Note: I have red circled but you don't need to do that.
