Creating a new style 0 Recommended Answers 12 Replies 125 Upvotes

I'd like to create a new style for Google Docs. Currently all that's listed are Normal text, Title, Subtitle, and Headings 1, 2, and 3. I'd like to create one for Footnotes and Endnotes. That way I can just select it from the list. Is there a way I can create a new style? This is currently a feature in other online office suites (e.g., Zoho Writer).

Hi, Jack,

The headings actually go up to six, I believe, but you won't see more until you use heading 3. When you do, you'll see heading 4 appear, and when you use heading 4 in your document, you'll see heading 5 appear, and so forth. Also, you don't have to use the default style settings -- you can change them as you like (you just can't change the name of the style). Here's how to change the default heading styles:

How to Adjust Default Heading Styles
1. Create a new document or go into a current document with headings formatted the way you want.
2. Drag your cursor through a heading that has the font and line spacing you prefer.
3. Go to Format > Paragraph styles > Title (or Subtitle, or Heading 1-6).
4. Select "Update Title (or Subtitle, or Heading 1-6) to match."
5. Next, go to Format > Paragraph styles > Options.
6. Select "Save as my default styles."

How to Adjust Default "Normal "Font or Line Spacing in Google Docs
1. Create a new document or go into a current document with the formatting you want.
2. Drag your cursor through a couple of sentences that are set up the way you want them, with the font and line spacing you prefer.
3. Go to Format > Paragraph styles > Normal text.
4. Select "Update 'Normal text' to match."
5. Next, go to Format > Paragraph styles > Options.
6. Select "Save as my default styles."

To help influence future feature changes or additions in Docs, I encourage you to provide feedback about this directly to the Docs team by following these steps:
  1. Open a document.
  2. Click Help > Report a problem
  3. Enter your feedback.
Although the product team is unable to respond to individual users directly, they review this feedback regularly and use it to help improve the product over time. Google doesn't monitor the help forums for user feedback, so it's important that you use the in-product tool. The more users who request this capability via in-product feedback, the greater the chances are of the team considering it.

Thanks Jo.

Yes, I'm familiar with all of those options but I was specifically wanted to create it's own style instead of using one of the Headings.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your weekend!

Hi, Jack,

There's an add-on for Docs called Paragraph Styles+ that might do what you want. Check it out and let me know what you think!

That looks like it will work, Jo, except it hasn't been verified with Google so I can't install it right now. :( Thanks for checking, though. I really appreciate it!

I think I may have found one (I always forget about Add-ons!); it's called "Styles" and looks like it will let me do what I'm needing.

Thanks again for the nudge.

My pleasure, Jack. I'm surprised that Paragraph Styles+ is showing up as unverified. I installed it quite a while ago and it's still working well for me. It's also showing up in the G Suite Marketplace for me, but I don't want to uninstall/reinstall it to test it out in case I can't get it back. :) I hope "Styles" will do what you need (fingers crossed)!

Unfortunately it didn't.

Oh well! I'll just keep doing what I have been doing and look for an add-on every now and then.

Thanks again for the help, Jo. Have a good week!

Oh, darn. I appreciate you letting me know the outcome, Jack. If you come across a new add-on down the road that does the trick or if Paragraph Styles+ becomes available again, please let me know.

Wishing you a great week as well!

If you just want a quick and dirty fix, try this:
  1. Type something out, anything.
  2. Customize your type (font, point size, etc)
  3. Highlight it, go to the Styles drop down as if you are going to change it to say, Heading 2 - BUT
  4. Select UPDATE Heading 2 to match.
Con - You lose the original Heading 2 properties
Pro - At least you have your own customized style.

Hi, DesignMakeEducate,

Thanks for jumping in! That solution will only save the style for that particular document. It won't add a new style that can be used in other documents or change your default styles for new documents. In order to do that, you would need to follow the instructions I provided earlier in this thread.

I said it was quick and dirty ;) I may start using your solution though,  so I can tweak paragraph spacing.  cheers, S

Since one can't control which heading options are included in a ToC, I was hoping to create a new style "Not-Heading4" that I could use for headings that I don't want in ToC.

Hi, Brad,

You can use the "Title" heading, as that won't appear in the TOC. Just customize it (per my instructions earlier in this thread) to whatever style parameters you need.
