Although it's not currently possible to do line numbering directly through Docs, there's a Chrome extension called Line Numbering for Google Docs that can accomplish this task. You can get it from the Chrome Store here:

After I sent that info to you, I checked on the extension, and it seems the developers have abandoned it, which is a shame, as there are no other options. The only alternative is to set your text up line by line as a list in text or in a table, both of which would be tedious for text that's more than a few lines. If that is something you'd like to try, I can explain how to do it. Otherwise, if this is essential to do after text has already been entered, you might need to use different software.
