Voice typing punctuation commands not working

I'm in a quiet space and the micophone is picking up my voice without any problem. The 3 commands - comma, full stop/period & question mark work (although they leave an infuriating space between the word and the symbol). All other commands are just spelt out. New line, new paragraph, insert etc. 

Is there a setting I'm missing that will stop adding a space and make the other listed voice commands work? 

The feature picks up my voice clearly in both UK and US English with very few errors but is unusable without punctuation. 

I'm using a Macbook Pro with an external microphone.

Please see this article from the Google Help Center and scroll down to see the troubleshooting tips at the end: Type with your voice​. Please be aware that punctuation doesn't work with all languages, although I imagine it should work with English.
 
If you continue to have problems with punctuation when using voice typing, I would suggest sending in your feedback and concerns directly to the Docs team by opening a Docs document and going to Help > Help Docs improve. The team is unable to respond to individual users, but they do review all feedback sent to them and use it to improve the app over time.

Thank you for your reply, I can see how active you are in the community and saw your advice to previous people asking similar questions. 

I had checked the trouble shooting article and searched the forum before posting. It works perfectly on the iPad so I shall just have to unfortunately accept that I can’t, for whatever reason, use it on the computer.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to reply. 
You're very welcome. I'm glad that at least it's working on your iPad. I wonder if it's the external microphone you're using with the computer that is interfering with the punctuation. Of course, if you're using it with the iPad as well, that wouldn't make sense. But it's just a thought.
