Google Docs Numbered Lists' formatting becomes highly unpleasant when the list is long.

Well, I was writing a document that required a long numbered list. The moment the list crossed 100, the gap between the number and the text increased weirdly. Now, the document's formatting is unpleasant.

Please find attached an image describing it better.

I use docs rather heavily. It would be great if this issue could get resolved.

Hi, Abhay,

Unfortunately, there isn't any way at this time to set the justification of the number independently of the text, although I think that would be a terrific addition to this feature. Please send a request for this capability directly to the Docs team by opening a Docs document and going to Help > Help Docs improve. The team is unable to respond to individual users, but they do review all feedback sent to them and use it to improve the app over time.

Hi, Abhay,

This alignment behavior can happen when the width of the number is wider than the space configured for it. This can be adjusted in the ruler at the top of the document by selecting the entire list and pulling the First Line Indent (flat bar) to the left, away from the Left Indent (triangle). This will give sufficient space for all of the numbers so that all the content can start at the Left Indent without getting bumped to the next tab stop.

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the quick response. What you said made sense. Your solution worked as there's enough room for the number to fit in. But this would create another formatting problem, though I am not sure if it's a problem or is the standard.

Creating enough space for large numbers implies that smaller numbers have more white spaces after them. For the extra whitespace to appear before the number, these numbers would need to be right-justified. Can this alignment for the numbers be right-justified while the text remains left-justified? In essence, can I set the justification of the numbers independently of the text?

I agree with you and Jo - this would be a terrific improvement - please do suggest it as Jo says.
