How do I make chapters in Google Docs?

I have tried creating headings and making a table of contents and it is going pretty well, but what I am looking for is something my friend had set up on one of her novels where it was a small side extension which showed every section in her book. It was available on every page and it was gray. It is hard to explain. Can someone just please tell me how to get on I am making a presentation for LGBTQ Suicide Prevention for my school as a campaign for a GSA club and I feel like it would make it much easier if I could just click on somethings to get transported to different areas whenever I want. It also looks much more professional than the link table of contents. Thank you!

Hi, Kaylee,

What you're referring to is "document outline." This article from the Google help center will guide you through the process of using this feature: Use document outlines, margins & rulers.

You will need to use headings (1-6) in order for chapter names to appear in the document outline. You can easily change the default heading styles to the style you prefer by following these steps:

How to Adjust Default Heading Styles
1. Create a new document or go into a current document with headings formatted the way you want.
2. Drag your cursor through a heading that has the font and line spacing you prefer.
3. Go to Format > Paragraph styles > Heading (1-6).
4. Select "Update Heading (1-6) to match."
5. Next, go to Format > Paragraph styles > Options.
6. Select "Save as my default styles."

Please let me know if you have further questions about the document outline feature or whether this covers what you need.

Hi KAYLEE SLATE

Are you able to share a screenshot of what you saw ?

Moving you to the Docs Help community where an expert there should be able to advise.
