Uploading bitmap images from the local machine

I have many 4096x3000 8-bit grayscale images (~11.7 MB each) that I wish to include in a google doc. When I select Insert > Image > Upload from computer and attempt to upload one of these bitmaps, I am greeted with the error message "Unable to create some images". This does not occur when I attempt to upload JPG or PNG files. I am able to upload bitmaps to the Google drive and then Insert > Image > Drive allows me to select the image in question. However this workaround is inefficient and takes up drive space, and requires me to refresh the docs page after uploading the images to the google drive. I'd like to avoid this workaround as it seems Google intends to support my desired functionality.

Is there a way to use Insert > Image > Upload from computer to upload .BMP files?

Greetings Everyone and Welcome to Google  Docs  Help Community 😀

As someone who likes to dabble in graphic layout I find this an interesting topic.

I just tried the steps provided by Ethan for uploading a Bmp image to drive and then inserting into a doc's editor file. It appears the image is optimized when placed into drive making it possible to insert into a doc's file. I find this a win win  providing the ability to have a wider selection of images to chose from when designing.

However Ethan is correct the insert image in a doc's editor is limited to png, jpg and png files.

Sometimes it isn't possible to add certain tools due to features which already exist.
It may be one of those give and take situations if the tool is added.
I wonder if another tool would be compromised?

However I do suggest providing Feedback to the Google Slides Team.
Provide as much detail about the feature and why it would be important to have.

Hi, Ethan,

I don't believe Docs actively supports bitmap images, so I'm surprised you're able to insert them into your documents at all. If you're able to get them into your documents with the method you're currently using, I'd suggest sticking with that, as I don't think there are any other workarounds available.
