Multiple equations on separate lines in 1 editor

In the previous document equation editor (the one based on LaTeX) I was able to enter multiple equations on separate lines in the same editor by entering \\ which put me on a new line.

Is there a way to do the same thing with the new docs equation editor?

LaTeX capability went out the door for the Google Documents editor in April or May 2010; at that time without any replacement. In November 2010 some limited functionality was restored and nothing further has happened with the equations editor. Multiline equations are not available in any structured form; as you have observed, each line has to be treated a separate equation. For alignment one must work with tabs or explicit whitespace. I find it insufferable.
