GillIf you open an old-style doc and make a du;licate of it that should give you an old-style 'template doc'.
Or, for a new one go to https://docs.google.com/?action=newdoc
...but not this may not work for ever!
Could you be a bit more specific about what you dislike about the new version? (Which I also prefer for many things.)

How can we improve it?

MichaelDuvallSeriously, there is no simple way to opt back to the old format, which I prefer highly over the new format. There is so much wasted screen/space with the new format. I realize Google is changing things to compete with Microsoft's entrance into the online document "marketplace" but it seems like Google would certainly have considered that there must be plenty of users who liked/needed the original format and provide a means to toggle a "mode" selection. Personally, I have need to copy large blocks of simple text (from forums and such) into larger files and it is much easier to work said text utilizing the whole screen instead of having it inside a "frame" that uses maybe half the screen. I guess I'd like to chime in with other people who have asked for an easy means to still utilize the original docs format and ask that you consider adding an option during document creation to chose which format works best for the job at hand.

grumpyOn newest Chrome / Windoze XP
Carriage Return puts a blank line in the right spot, but sends the cursor to the top left corner of the text box, so furthur typing in this text box I'm in now would go in front of "On newest Chrome" after I hit [Return]
I'll try rebooting. I already restarted Chrome. Note that it happens in the text box in this support forum as well as docs editor.
