Trouble working with large collection of files

Greetings. I have found several problems for large file collections. Primarily I use Chrome on Ubuntu 10.10, but I also use Firefox on Ubuntu and IE9 on Windows. Uploading more than a few hundred files is a pain at the point where one pastes the file list into the upload dialog box. The Chrome browser just hangs and never recovers, whereas the FF browser may hang for 30 minutes or so before accepting the paste. After the files are uploaded one needs to "hide" them in order not to clog up the home view. Say that the files were uploaded into folder Foo; one goes to Foo and lists the files. The idea is to "select" them all and then hide them. But at first you only see 50 files. Scroll down and the system gives you another 50. If this were the start of a geometric progression it wouldn't be too bad, but it is the start of an arithmetic progression. Anyway, after much work one finally has 2000 files in the view, but that is the end; it appears to be the maximum number of files that will be displayed. OK, we live with it, select all, and then click on Hide. The system goes into a tank and then comes back with "an unexpected error occurred, please try again". Try again, but the unexpected error occurs again; I think it happens each time that one tries to Hide more than a few hundred files. It would help to be able to Select all files in a Folder, never mind if they are in the current view. It would also help to be able to move the field of view through a long list, loosing view at the top while gaining it at the bottom, if the list is too long to be displayed all at once.
