Add a second Y-axis

You can add a second Y-axis to a line, area, or column chart.

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Customize.
  4. Click Series.
  5. Optional: Next to "Apply to," choose the data series you want to appear on the right axis.
  6. Under "Axis," choose Right axis.
  7. To customize the axis, click Right vertical axis. Then, make your changes.

Tip: You can’t add a second X-axis, but you can add series sets.

Switch rows & columns in a chart

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Setup.
  4. Click Switch rows / columns.

Customize the axes

Edit the vertical axis

You can format the labels, set min or max values, and change the scale.

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Customize.
  4. Click Vertical axis.
  5. Make the changes you want.

Tip: To hide the vertical axis line, uncheck the box next to "Show axis line".

Choose which data shows on the horizontal axis
  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Select the cells you want to include in your chart.
  3. Click Insert and then Chart.
  4. At the right, click Setup.
  5. In the box next to "x-axis," click More More and then Edit.
  6. Select the cells you want to show on the horizontal axis.
  7. Click OK.

You can format the labels or reverse axis order.

Tip: If the chart contains time series or numeric data, you can also change the min and max values.

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Customize.
  4. Click Horizontal axis.
  5. Make the changes you want.

Group horizontal axis data

To show more info, you can label groups of columns on the horizontal axis.

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Ensure that the data has more than one X-axis column. For example: Year, Quarter, and Month.
  3. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  4. At the right, click Setup.
  5. Next to “Grouping,” click Add.
  6. Pick the group you want.
  7. To add more groups, click Add again.

Add series sets (domain sets)

To show sets of data side by side, you can add X-axis columns to your spreadsheet and chart. For bar charts, you can also add Y-axis columns.

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Setup.
  4. At the bottom, click Add axis & series set.
  5. Pick your X-axis and series.
To add more series sets, click Add axis & series set again.

  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Customize.
  4. Click Chart & axis title.
  5. Next to "Type," choose which title you want to change.
  6. Under "Title text," enter a title.
  7. Make changes to the title and font.
Add & format tick marks
  1. On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Double-click the chart you want to change.
  3. At the right, click Customize.
  4. Under "Gridlines and ticks," check the box next to "Major ticks."
  • Optional: You can check the box next to "Minor ticks" to have smaller ticks between the major ticks.

Tip: To customize your axis, you can change the spacing between ticks, line thickness, and color.
