Add, edit, reply, or delete comments

Use comments to work with others on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Comment options

View all comments
  1. Open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. At the top of the screen, tap Comment .

Note: To see a single comment, look for yellow highlighted text in a document or an orange corner in a cell. To view the comment, tap the cell or text, then tap View comment.

Add comments
  1. Open a file in the Google Docs app.
  2. Select the text or cell and tap Add Comment.
  3. Add your text.
  4. Tap Done Chrome mobile checkmark icon.
Respond to comments

After you tap a cell or text with a comment, then tap View comment, you can:

  • Edit a comment: Tap More More > Edit. Make your changes, then tap Done Chrome mobile checkmark icon.
  • Reply to a comment: At the bottom of the comment, tap Reply.
  • Resolve a comment: At the bottom of a comment, tap Resolve.
  • Move between comments: Swipe left or right.
  • Delete comment: Tap More More > Delete.
  • Return to editing view: Tap outside of the comment area on the document, spreadsheet, or presentation.
Send a comment to a specific person

To make sure someone sees a comment, you can add them to it. They will receive an email notification with your comment.

  1. Open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Insert and type a comment.
  3. Somewhere in your comment, add the name. When the correct person is suggested, tap their name. You can also add the email address of the person you want to see the message.
  4. Tap Done Chrome mobile checkmark icon.

Note: The owner of a document will get notifications for all comments by default.

Accept or reject a suggested edit

If someone suggests an edit to a document you own, you can accept or reject it. This is only available in Google Docs.

  1. Open a file in the Google Docs app.
  2. To see the suggestion, tap Hidden Suggestion.
  3. Tap Accept or Reject.

Note: If you decide you don't like a suggestion you accepted, tap Undo.

Use action items

Use comments to assign action items with your work or school account.

Assign an action item in a comment
  1. Open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Highlight the text, images, cells, or slides you want to comment on.
  3. To add a comment, tap Insert Add.
  4. Tap Comment.
  5. Type your comment.
  6. Somewhere in your comment, add the email address, with @ or + in front of it, of the person you want to assign it to.
  7. Tap the box next to "Assign to [name]."
  8. Tap Assign. The person you assigned the action item to will get an email.
Reassign an action item
  1. Open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Tap the text with a comment.
  3. Tap View comment.
  4. Tap Reply.
  5. Type your comment.
  6. Somewhere in your comment, add the email address, with @ or + in front of it, of the person you want to assign it to.
  7. Tap the box next to "Reassign to [name]."
  8. Tap Reassign. The person you assigned the action item to will get an email.
Mark an action item as done
  1. Open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. In the top right corner of the comment, tap Done Done.
See the follow-ups on a document
  1. Open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. In the top right corner of a document, tap the number. If you don’t see a number, you don’t have any follow ups for that document.
  3. You can see the number of open:
    • Action items
    • Suggestions
  4. To go to the first action item or suggestion, tap an option from the list.
  5. To close the menu, tap the number.
