You can collaborate with others on Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Vids to:

  • Add, edit, reply, filter, or delete comments
  • Assign tasks and action items
  • Add emoji reactions

Important: On your Android phone or tablet, when you use a web browser to access Google Vids:

  • You can watch processed videos.
  • You can’t edit or add comments to videos.

Comment options

View all comments
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. At the top, tap Comment Comment.
  3. To move through discussion threads, swipe left or right.
Add comments
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Select the text or cell.
  3. Tap More More and then Add Comment.
  4. Add your text.
  5. Tap Send Send.
Respond to comments

After you tap a specific comment, you can:

  • Edit a comment: Tap More More and then Edit Edit. Make your changes, then tap Save.
  • Reply to a comment: At the bottom, tap Add a reply.
  • Resolve a comment: Above the comment, tap Resolve.
  • Move between comments: Swipe left or right.
  • Delete comment: Tap More More and then Delete.
  • Return to editing view: Tap Close Close.
Send a comment to a specific person

To make your comment visible to someone, you can add them to the comment. They will receive an email notification with your comment.

Tip: If someone has set their status to “Out of office” and you have permission to view their calendar, you will get a notification in the comment as you add them.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Insert and type a comment.
  3. To the left of your comment, tap @, then enter in the name or email address of the person you want to see the comment. When the correct person is suggested, tap their name.
  4. Tap Send Send.
Accept or reject a suggested edit

If someone suggests an edit to a document you own, you can accept or reject it. This is only available in Google Docs.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. To see the suggestion, tap Suggestion.
  3. Tap Accept or Reject.

Tip: If you decide later you don't like a suggestion you accepted, tap Undo.

Add comments in Microsoft® Office files

To add comments to Microsoft Office files in the Google Docs app, change the file to a Google Docs file.

Use & follow up on action items

Use comments to assign tasks or action items with your work or school account.

Assign an action item in a comment
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Highlight the text, images, cells, or slides you want to comment on.
  3. To add a comment, tap More More and then Add Comment.
  4. Type your comment.
  5. To the left of your comment, tap @ and enter in the person’s name or email address.
  6. Tap the box next to "Assign to [name]" and then Assign.

Tip: If someone has set their status to “Out of office” and you have permission to view their calendar, you get a notification in the comment as you assign it to them.

Reassign an action item
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Tap text with a comment and then View comment and then Add a reply.
  3. Type your comment.
  4. To the left of your comment, tap @ and enter in the person’s name or email address.
  5. Tap the box next to "Reassign to [name]" and then Send Send.

Tip: If someone has set their status to “Out of office” and you have permission to view their calendar, you get a notification in the comment as you assign it to them.

Mark an action item as done
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. In the top right corner of the comment, tap Mark done.
See the follow-ups on a document
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. At the top-right, tap the number.
    • If you don’t see a number, you don’t have any follow ups for that document.
  3. You can see the number of open:
    • Action items
    • Suggestions
  4. To go to the first action item or suggestion, tap an option from the list.
  5. To close the menu, tap the number.

Use emoji reactions in Google Docs

If you have comment or edit access to a Google Doc, you can add emoji reactions to content you highlight.

Add emoji reactions
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs app.
  2. Select the text you want to react to. 
  3. Tap More More and then Add emoji reaction.
  4. Choose which emoji you want to add.

Tip: On an Android phone or tablet, emoji reactions appear with other comments. You can also add multiple emoji to the same text.

Archive emoji reactions
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a file in the Google Docs app.
  2. In the top-right corner of the comment, tap Mark done.
