Create, view, or download a file

 

You can create, find, and download files like: 

  • Documents
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentations
  • Forms 
  • Videos

Your files are available to edit, share, and work on with others. Learn how to find files in Google Drive.

Important: If you try to open a file suspected of phishing or malware, you may get a warning. Use caution when you open the file.

Important: On your mobile device, you can use a web browser to access Google Vids. You can watch processed videos, but you can’t edit or add comments to videos on mobile.

Create a file

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. In the bottom right, tap Create Add question.
  3. Choose whether to use a template or create a new file. The app will open a new file.

View a file

You can view files that you’ve created or opened on any device and other documents like Microsoft® Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files.

Tip: If someone else is working on the file, you’ll see the changes they're making.

Look at a file

To open and view a file, tap the file’s name in the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.

View files grouped by category

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Choose which files you want to see:
    • Recent: Files you’ve worked on recently.
    • Shared with me: Files others have shared with you.
    • Starred: Files you’ve marked as important.
    • Offline: Files stored on your phone or tablet.

Rename a file

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. On the file you want to rename, tap More More.
  3. Tap Rename Rename.
  4. Enter the name you want.
  5. Tap Ok.

Save a file

  • When you're online, Google automatically saves your changes as you type. You don't need a save button.
  • While offline, changes will save to your device as you enter text, and will save to Drive once reconnected.

Tip: On Google Sheets, you need to tap outside of the cell you're typing in to save.

Make a copy of a file

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Next to the name of the document you want to copy, tap More More.
  3. Tap Make a copy Make a copy.
  4. Enter a title and choose where to save it.
  5. Tap Ok.

Download a copy of your file

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. On the file you want to download, tap More More.
  3. Tap Download . The file will download onto your phone and you’ll see a notification message.
