You can add emojis to your Google Docs and Sheets. In Google Docs and Slides, you can also add special characters, like arrows, shapes or accent marks.
Insert emojis in your Google Doc
- On your computer, open a Google Doc.
- You can either:
- At the top, click Insert Emoji.
- Enter
@emoji
and press Enter.
- Choose the emoji that you want to add or enter search terms for an emoji.
- You can also directly search for emojis in the doc by entering
:
and entering search terms. For example, to find a list of cat-related emojis, enter:cat
and press Enter.

To disable emoji insertion through colon characters, go to Tools Preferences, and untick Insert emojis using the colon character.
Insert special characters
- On your computer, open Google Docs or Slides.You can't insert special characters directly in Google Sheets.
- Open or create a document or presentation.
- At the top, click Insert Special characters.
- Find the character you want to insert:
- Pick from categories.
- Enter the character's Unicode value.
- In the box on the right, write the character.
- To add a character to your file, click it.
- Optional: If you want to add the special character to a spreadsheet, copy it and paste it in a cell on the sheet.
