Edit spreadsheets on Android

You can edit spreadsheets with the Sheets app.

Edit a spreadsheet

  1. Open the Sheets app .
  2. Tap the spreadsheet you want to edit.
  3. Double-tap the place in your spreadsheet you want to edit.
  4. Begin editing.

Note: If you're editing Microsoft Excel® files, you may see other editing options that aren't described below.

Editing options

Some editing options are only available on the most recent version of the Google Sheets app for Android or if you have "edit" access to the spreadsheet.

Copy, cut, and paste

To select the contents of a cell, tap the cell. Use the blue markers to expand your text selection to other cells.

Editing options will appear in a menu after you select text. Tap one to take action:

  • Cut
  • Copy
  • Paste
  • Paste special

You can cut and paste, or copy and paste, text within or across spreadsheets in the app. But, text copied and pasted from one spreadsheet into another will be pasted without formatting.

Format text in a spreadsheet

Bold, italicize, underline, and strikethrough text

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap a cell to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the number of cells that are selected.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Choose from one of the following options:
    Icon Description
    Bold
    Italicize
    Underline
    Strikethrough
  5. The text in your selected cells will change when you choose an option. Tap the option again to remove the formatting.

Change font size, color, or style

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap a cell to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the number of cells that are selected.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Change the font size, color, or style:
    • Size: Tap the arrows next to "Text size" to increase or decrease the size of your selected font.
    • Color: Tap Text color and choose a new color from the options that appear.
    • Style: Tap the current font being used and select a new font from the list
  5. The text in your selected cells will change when you choose an option. Tap the spreadsheet to continue editing.

Change text alignment

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap a cell to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the number of cells that are selected.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Choose from one of the following options to change how your text lines up vertically or horizontally:
    Icon Definition
    Left align (horizontal)
    Center align (horizontal)
    Right align (horizontal)
    Top align (vertical)
    Middle align (vertical)
    Bottom align (vertical)
  5. The text in your selected cells will change when you choose an option. Tap the spreadsheet to continue editing.

Clear text formatting

  1. Open a spreadsheet on your Android device.
  2. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  3. On the formatting menu, tap Clear formatting.
Format cells in a spreadsheet

There are a number of ways to format your cells and cell contents.

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap a cell to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the number of cells that are selected.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Go to the "Cell" section of the window that appears.
  5. Choose from one of the following options to change your cell formatting:
    Option Directions
    Fill color Tap Fill color and choose a color to fill the cells you’ve selected
    Borders Tap Borders and choose a border for your selected cells. You can also choose a style of border, and border color.
    Wrap text Tap from Off to On if you want all the text in your selected cells to be visible. Tap again to reverse the change.
    Merge cells Tap from Off to On to combine your selected cells into one cell. Tap again to reverse the change
    Number format Tap Number format and choose a type of formatting for the numbers within your selected cells. You can also choose from currency and date/time formatting.
    Decimal places Tap the “Up” and “Down” arrows next to “Decimal places” to add or remove decimal places from the numbers in your selected cells.
    Clear formatting Tap Clear formatting to remove all formatting from the selected cells
  6. Your selected cells will change when you choose an option. Tap the spreadsheet to continue editing.
Work with columns and rows

Insert a row or column

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap a cell next to the row or column you want to add.
  3. In the top right, tap the + button.
  4. Choose Column left or Column right to add a column to the left or right of your selected cell. Choose Row above or Row below to add a row above or below the cell.

Delete a row or column

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the header for the the row or column you want to delete.
  3. Tap the header again to pull up a menu.
  4. Choose Delete to remove the row or column from your spreadsheet.

Freeze panes, rows, or columns

You can freeze rows and columns of your spreadsheet so that you can continue seeing these cells as you move around the spreadsheet.

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the dropdown arrow next to the name of the sheet at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the "up" and "down" arrows next to "Freeze rows" or "Freeze columns" to freeze rows or columns in the sheet.

Hide a row or column

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the header of the row or column you want to hide.
  3. Tap the header again and a menu will appear.
  4. Choose Hide row or Hide column .

Unhide a row or column

To see if a row or column is hidden in a spreadsheet, check if there are any skipped numbers or letters in the headers for the rows or columns. To unhide a row or column:

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap a row or column header on either side of the hidden row or column. Use the blue markers to highlight both of the rows or columns around the hidden item.
  3. Tap the selected headers again and a menu will appear.
  4. Choose Unhide row or Unhide column.
Add formulas to a spreadsheet
  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the cell where you want to add the formula.
  3. In the bottom left corner, tap Function . If you want to type in the formula manually or the cell already has content in it, skip to Step 7.
  4. Select a function.
  5. Choose the function you want to use in your formula.
  6. Tap OK. A description of the function will show as you work on it to guide you through formula creation.
  7. To use the content of other cells in your formula equation, type the names of the cells into the formula. You can also tap a cell and drag the dots at the corners to select a range of cells.
  8. Choose from the symbols below the text box to add to the formula. For example, to subtract the contents of one cell from another, touch the minus symbol.
  9. To finish the formula, tap Done .
Undo or redo an action

To undo an action in a spreadsheet in the Sheets app go to the top of the screen and tap Undo .

To redo an action, tap Redo .

Edit charts

Move a chart

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the chart you want to move.
  3. Tap the chart and drag it to its new location.

Resize a chart

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the chart you want to resize.
  3. Use the blue markers to resize the chart.

Delete a chart

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Tap the chart you want to delete. Tap it again to see the editing options.
  3. Tap Delete.
