View and create documents on your iPhone or iPad

This article describes the latest version of the Docs app for iOS. To download the Docs app, or upgrade to the latest version, download an update from the App Store.

View documents

With the Docs app, you can view Google Docs files that you’ve created or opened on any device, as well as other text documents like Microsoft® Word files.

To open and view a document, simply touch the document’s name in the Docs app. If someone else is working on the document, you’ll also see changes being made.

Different ways to view documents

To more easily find your documents, you can change the way you view files in the Docs app:

  1. Open the Docs app.
  2. Touch the navigation panel on the left-hand side.
  3. Choose the way you want to see files using one of the options below:
    View Notes
    Docs
    • All private and shared documents that you’ve opened with the most recent at the top
    Shared with me
    • Documents that have been shared with you. By touching the menu button next to a file in Shared with me, you can perform a number of actions including:
      • Share
      • Download
      • Move to a folder in Drive
      • Print
      • Remove
    • Add a document to "My Drive" by touching the Add to My Drive icon .
    Starred
    • Documents that you have starred as important
    On device
    • Documents you’ve made available to view offline on your iPhone or iPad

Create documents

To create a new document:

  1. Open the Docs app.
  2. In the bottom-right corner of the app, touch the + button. A new Google Docs file will automatically open.

Once you’ve created a new document, you can find it in these other places:

Rename a document

To rename a document, touch its title > type the new name > select OK.

Save a document

If you’ve created a document using Google Docs, your changes will save automatically.

If you’ve created a document using Word, touch the back button in the top left corner of the app when you’re editing to save your changes.

Related articles

If you want to view or edit a spreadsheet, search for it in the Sheets app. If you want to view or edit a presentation, search for it in the Slides app.  All other file types (photo, videos, etc.) can be viewed in the Drive app.
