Get started with Google Pics

Feature availability

  • This feature is available in Gemini Beta, which is available for work and school accounts only. Your administrator controls access to Gemini Beta work and school accounts. If you can't find this feature, your administrator may not have Beta features enabled for your organization.
  • It's supported for Google Workspace Experiments, which is a trusted tester program for personal accounts to try new AI features. Learn more about Workspace Experiments.
  • Currently on Desktop and in US-English only.

Google Pics is an image creation and editing tool powered by Gemini (Nano Banana). With Google Pics, you can design, generate, and edit images with prompts, or use existing images as style and element references for your creations.

You can use Google Pics on your computer with the 2 most recent versions of these browsers:

Tip: Other browsers may work, but you might not be able to use all of the features.

Media & file types compatible with Pics

You can upload these image types from your computer or from Google Drive: .jpg, .png, .bmp, .tiff.

Upload and edit an image

You can use Google Pics to generate new images from existing images.

  1. On your computer, open Google Pics.
  2. To add images to the canvas, you can drop or select an image from
    • Your computer
    • Drive
    • Google Photos
  3. You can now edit your image:

Create a new image from a prompt

You can use Google Pics to generate new images from text prompts.

  1. On your computer, Open Google Pics.
  2. Write a prompt in the bottom bar describing the image you want to create and then click submit.
  3. Optional: You can click Add images to add images as reference.
  4. To choose from the generated versions in the panel on the left click on an image.
  5. Optional: If you want to see more options, click Retry.
  6. You can now edit your image:
    1. With a prompt
    2. With another image as reference.

Add images as reference

You can reuse style or elements from existing images on your new generated image.

  1. On your computer, Open Google Pics.
  2. To add an image to the bottom bar from your computer, you can:
    1. Drag and drop
    2. Copy-paste
    3. Click Add images 
  3. Describe in a prompt how you want to reference this image to generate a new one. For example: "Use the blue in this image as the color for the background of my new image."
