Edit documents on Android

This information only applies to the latest version of the Docs app for Android. To download the Docs app, or upgrade to the latest version, go to Google Play.

You can edit your Google Docs and other documents, including Word documents, with the Docs app for Android. Editing is possible whether or not your device has an Internet connection. Just make sure you’ve set up offline access for that document.

To begin editing:

  1. Open the Docs app for Android.
  2. Find the document you want to edit.
  3. In the bottom right corner of the screen, touch the edit button . You can also double tap the place in your document where you’d like to make an edit.
  4. Begin making your edits.

Simply close the keyboard to keep viewing your document after you’ve finished with your edits.

Note that there may be additional features available when editing Word files in the Docs app that aren’t covered in the information below.

Format text

Cut, copy, and paste text

To select a word, double tap or touch and hold it for 1-2 seconds. Use the blue handles to expand your text selection.

Editing options will appear in a menu once you’ve selected text. Touch one to take action:

  • Cut
  • Copy
  • Paste

You can cut and paste, or copy and paste, text within or across documents in the Android app. But, text copied and pasted from one document into another will be pasted without formatting.

Bold, italicize, underline, and strikethrough text

  1. Open the document.
  2. Double tap, or touch and hold, a word to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the text that’s selected.
  3. Touch the Format icon .
  4. Choose from one of the following options:
    Icon Description
    Bold
    Italicize
    Underline
    Strikethrough
    Superscript
    Subscript
  5. Your text will change when you choose an option. Touch the option again to remove the formatting.

Change font style, size, or color

  1. Open the document.
  2. Double tap, or touch and hold, a word to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the text that’s selected.
  3. Touch the Format icon .
  4. Change the font style, size, or color:
    • Style: Touch the current style of font being used and select from normal text, title, subtitle, and heading styles.
    • Font: Touch the current font being used and select a new font from the list.
    • Size: Touch the arrows next to “Text size” to increase or decrease the size of your selected font.
    • Text color: Touch Text color and choose a new color for your text.
    • Highlight color: Touch Highlight color and choose a new color to highlight your text with.
  5. Your text will change when you choose an option. Touch back on the document to continue editing.

Spell check

When editing a document on an Android device, your spelling is checked automatically. If a word is misspelled, it'll be underlined in red. If you want to see suggestions for the misspelled word, touch the word and suggested spellings will appear. Touch the word you want to use to replace the original word.

Format paragraphs

Change paragraph alignment

  1. Open the document.
  2. Double tap, or touch and hold, a word to select it. Move the blue markers to expand the text that’s selected.
  3. Touch the Format icon .
  4. Go to the “Paragraph” section of the window that appears.
  5. Choose from one of the following options to change your text alignment:
    Icon Definition
    Left align
    Center align
    Right align
    Justify (right and left align)
  6. Your text will change when you choose an option. Touch back on the document to continue editing.

Change line spacing for a paragraph

  1. Open the document.
  2. Touch the paragraph you want to change line spacing for.
  3. Touch the Format icon .
  4. Go to the "Paragraph" section of the window that appears.
  5. Under "Line spacing," choose the amount of space you want between the lines in the paragraph.
  6. The line spacing of your text will change when you choose an option. Touch back on the document to continue editing.

Add a numbered or bulleted list

  1. Open the document.
  2. Touch a section of the document or double tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to expand text that’s been selected.
  3. Touch the Format icon .
  4. Go to the “Paragraph” section of the window that appears.
  5. Touch the Numbered list icon , the Bulleted list icon , or the Multi-level list icon . You can also touch next to the icons to choose a different style of numbered or bulleted list.
  6. Your text will change when you choose an option. Touch back on the document to continue editing.
Add and edit tables

You can add a table to your document on your mobile device or edit an existing table.

Add a table

  1. Open the document.
  2. Touch a section of the document to select where you’d like the table to be.
  3. Touch the + button in the top-right.
  4. Choose Insert table.
  5. Touch the arrows next to “Rows” and “Columns” to add or remove rows and columns to the table.
  6. Your table will be automatically inserted in the document. Touch back on the document to continue editing.

Insert a row or column in a table

  1. Open the document.
  2. Touch the existing table.
  3. Touch the + icon in the bottom left of the table to add a row. Or touch the + icon in the top-right of the table to add a column.
  4. The column or row will be automatically added in the document.

Adjust row height or column width

  1. Open the document.
  2. Touch the existing table.
  3. Touch the Format icon .
  4. Go to the “Table” section of the window that appears.
  5. Touch the “Up” arrows next to “Row height” or “Column width” to make the rows or columns of the table larger. Or touch the “Down” arrows to make the table’s rows or columns smaller.
  6. The columns or rows will be automatically adjusted in the document. Touch back on the document to continue editing.

Select multiple cells in a table

  1. Open the document.
  2. Touch a cell in the existing table.
  3. Touch the blue “Down” arrow to select the column. Touch the blue “Right” arrow to select the row.
  4. Drag the blue markers to expand the highlighted section in the table to the rows or columns you want selected.
  5. Add any formatting you want to the selected columns or rows.
Undo or redo an action

To undo an action in a document in the Docs app, simply click the undo icon at the top of the screen.

To redo an action, click the redo icon at the top.
