Edit documents on your phone or tablet

You can edit documents with the Google Docs app.

Edit a document

  1. Open the Google Docs app .
  2. Tap the document you want to edit.
  3. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  4. Begin editing.

Editing options

Some editing options are only available on the most recent version of the Google Docs app for Android or iPhone/iPad, or if you have "edit" access to the document.

Note: If you're editing Microsoft Word files, you may see other editings options that aren't described below.

Format text

Cut, copy, and paste text

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  3. A menu will be displayed over the selected text. Tap Cut, Copy, or Paste.

Format text

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Choose from one of the following options:
    Icon Description
    format Bold Bold
    Format italic Italics
    Underline
    Strikethrough
    Superscript
    Subscript
  5. Your text will change when you choose an option. Tap the option again to remove the formatting.

Change font style, size, or color

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Change the font style, size, or color:
    • Style: Tap Style and select from normal text, title, subtitle, and heading styles.
    • Font: Tap Font select a new font.
    • Size: Tap the arrows next to Size to make the text bigger or smaller.
    • Text color: Tap Text color and choose a color.
    • Highlight color: Tap Highlight color and choose a color.

Clear text formatting

  1. Open a document on your device.
  2. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Tap Clear formatting.
Format paragraphs

Change paragraph alignment

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Double-tap a word to select it. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Go to the “Paragraph” section.
  5. Choose from one of the following options:
    Icon Definition
    Left align
    Center align
    Right align
    Justify (right and left align)

Change line spacing for a paragraph

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Tap Format Format.
  3. Go to the "Paragraph" section.
  4. Next to "Line spacing," use the arrows to choose the amount of space you want between the lines in the paragraph.
Undo or redo an action

To undo an action, go to the top of the screen and tap Undo .

To redo an action, tap Redo .

Add and edit tables

Add a table

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Tap the + (plus) button in the top right.
  3. Choose Table.
  4. Touch the arrows next to “Rows” and “Columns” to chose how many rows and columns to add to the table.
  5. Tap Insert table.

Insert a row or column in a table

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Tap and hold (Android) or touch (iPhone/iPad) a table to select it.
  3. On Android, tap the + (plus) icon in the bottom left of the table to add a row, or tap the + (plus) icon in the top right of the table to add a column. On an iPhone/iPad, choose an option:
    • Insert row above: Add a row above the selected cell.
    • Insert row below: Add a row below the selected cell.
    • Insert column left: Add a column to the left of the selected cell.
    • Insert column right: Add a column to the right of the selected cell.

Adjust row height or column width

  1. Open a document and double-tap (Android) or tap (iPhone/iPad) the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Double-tap a cell in a table.
  3. Tap Format Format.
  4. Go to the “Table” section.
  5. Tap the arrows next to “Row height” or “Column width” to make the rows or columns larger or smaller.

Select multiple cells in a table (Android only)

  1. Open a document and double-tap the place in your document you want to edit.
  2. Tap the table cells you want to select.
  3. Tap the blue “Down” arrow to select a column. Tap the blue “Right” arrow to select a row. To select the whole table, tap the gray circle in the upper left.
Track changes to a document (.docx files only)

You can track changes that you make in a Word file, or review changes made by others in the Docs app. This feature is only available for Word files in .docx format.

Turn on track changes

If you open a document that already has tracked changes, this feature will be turned on by default. To turn on tracked changes manually:

  1. Open the .docx file you want to track changes in.
  2. In the top right, tap More More.
  3. Check the box next to “Track changes.”
  4. Changes you make will show up in a different color. Anything you delete will show up with a strikethrough.

Accept or reject a tracked change

  1. Open the .docx file with the tracked changes.
  2. Tap the suggestion that you want to review.
  3. Tap Suggestions.
  4. Choose Accept to add the change to your document or Reject to remove the change.

If you want to accept or reject all tracked changes to a document, follow steps 1-3 above, touch the back arrow, and choose Accept all changes or Reject all changes.
