Apply formatting with the paint format tool

To copy formatting from one section of text, set of cells, or object to another in a document, spreadsheet, or presentation, use the paint format tool.

  1. Open your document, spreadsheet, or drawing.
  2. Select the text, range of cells, or object where you want to copy the formatting.
  3. In the toolbar, click the Paint format icon .
  4. Select the text, range of cells, or object you want to paste the formatting onto.
  5. The formatting will automatically change to reflect the original formatting you copied.

Keyboard shortcuts

To copy the formatting of selected text:

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + C (Windows or Chrome OS) or Cmd + Option + C (Mac).

To apply the formatting you copied to a different text selection:

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + V (Windows or Chrome OS) or Cmd + Option + V (Mac).
