Summarize your document in Docs with Gemini (Workspace Labs)

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is a trusted tester program for users to try new AI Features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open a document in Google Docs. In a document, enter: @Summary and then look for “AI summary.” Learn where you can use Workspace Labs features.

You can generate in-line summaries of a document when you use "@AI summary" in Docs.

Generate a summary with Gemini

Important: This feature is only available in Editing and Suggesting modes.

When you generate a summary, it summarizes all the text in a document, including the text in different tabs.

  1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
  2. In the document, enter: @Summary.
    • Or, enter: @ and then under “Building blocks,” click AI summary .
  3. Click AI summary .
    • When the document summary block shows, you can select:
      • Refresh summary Refresh to update the summary.
      • Accept changes Checkmark to insert the block in the document.
      • Discard changes Remove from outline to remove the summary block from the document.

Tip: If you use this feature in Suggesting mode, the summary block shows up as a suggestion.

Update a summary

  1. In the document, click the AI Summary block.
  2. On the left of the summary block, click Refresh summary Refresh.
  3. Select Accept changes Checkmark or Discard changes Remove from outline.

Give feedback on generated documents

Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request. Because feedback may be human readable, please do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.

If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.

  1. At the bottom right of the summary block, you can select Useful summary or Not useful summary .
  2. If you select Useful summary , in the pop-up window, you can select the data you want to share along with your feedback. This includes prompts, additional context, and outputs. If you don’t want to share certain data, you can uncheck it.
    1. If you select Not useful summary , to select the issue you found, click Next.
    2. Then, enter additional feedback.
  3. Click Submit.

To provide general feedback on this feature, at the top, click Help and then Help Docs improve .

Turn off the AI summary feature

To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs, you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you can’t rejoin Workspace Labs. Learn more about how to exit Workspace Labs.

How Workspace Labs data in Google Docs is collected

When you generate in-line summaries in Google Docs, Google uses and stores the following data:

  • Prompts you enter or select
  • Generated text
  • Document content that is referenced to generate text
