Use document tabs in Google Docs

You can create and manage tabs in Google Docs to better organize your documents.

With tabs you can:

  • Visualize the document structure anytime.
  • Use the tabs as sections of a document for easier navigation.

Create a tab

Important: By default, a new document has a tab called "Tab 1." You can’t delete "Tab 1" unless another tab is present.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. At the bottom, tap the tabs menu and then Add tab .

Manage your tabs

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. At the bottom, tap the tabs menu.
  3. To manage your tab, tap Tab options .
  4. You can either:
    • Add: Tap Add subtab .
    • Delete: Tap Delete Delete .
    • Duplicate: Tap Duplicate .
    • Rename: Tap Rename .
    • Copy link: Tap Copy link Insert link.
    • Arrange: Tap Move up or Move down .

Find & navigate tabs

  1. On your Android phone, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. At the bottom of your document, you can find the current tab.
  3. To find other tabs, you can either:
    • Find the list of tabs: To find the list of tabs, at the bottom, tap the tabs menu.
    • Move between tabs: To move between tabs, tap the arrows .
On your Android tablet
  1. On your tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. To find other tabs, at the bottom left, tap the tabs menu .
