Create a file from a template

Note: The Drive template gallery will become unavailable on March 9th, 2017.

At that time, https://drive.google.com/templates will no longer work.

To save a template from the Google Drive template gallery, you can:

  • Use the template, which will automatically create a copy in "My Drive."
  • Save the template preview page as a bookmark.

Use templates to create formatted files like a resume, budget, or order form.

Note: Templates are only available in English.

Use your work or school template gallery

You can use the custom template gallery if your Google Account is through work or school.

If you don’t see your work or school gallery, your administrator may have disabled it.

See your work or school templates
  1. Open a Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms home screen.
  2. Click TEMPLATE GALLERY.
  3. Make sure the tab with your organization's name is selected.
  4. To use a template, click it.
Submit a template for work or school

Submit a template to the gallery so others can use it. To submit a template, someone at your work or school must be the file owner and you must be an editor. Sharing of the file can’t be restricted.

  1. Open a Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms home screen.
  2. Click TEMPLATE GALLERY.
  3. Click Submit template, then click:
    • Select a document
    • Select a spreadsheet
    • Select a presentation
    • Select a form
  4. Click the file you want to add, then click Open. You can also choose to use a copy of the document as the template.
  5. Choose a category, then click Submit. Your template will be submitted to the gallery.

Your school or work may have to approve your template. If it’s approved, anyone in your organization will be able to find, view, and use the file as a template. Any changes you make will show in the template gallery.

If you don’t see the option to submit a template, your organization may have restricted access to administrators.

Remove a template from the gallery

You can take templates you have edit access to out of the gallery.

  1. Open a Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms home screen.
  2. Click TEMPLATE GALLERY.
  3. On the template you want to remove, click More More.
  4. Click Remove from gallery.

You can also remove a template from the gallery by restricting the sharing settings or moving it into the trash. If you re-share the file with everyone at your work or school, or take it out of the trash, the template will be added back to the gallery.

Follow Google’s content policies when using the template gallery.
