Insert and use variable chips

Variable chips are only available for eligible work or school accounts, and you're not currently signed in. Learn more about work and school accounts.

Sign in to your work account

If you're using Google Docs on an eligible work or school account, you can create and use variable chips in your document to:

• Fill in multiple fields at once with the same text
• Create templates that you can export with different variable values. 

Create a new variable chip

1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
2. You can either:

• Go to Insert  Smart chips  Variables.
• Type '@' and select Variable.

3. Click Insert new variable .
4. Optional: From the right panel, you can rename a variable chip. Hover over the variable chip, click Edit name .

Assign a value to a variable chip

When you change the value of a variable chip, the change will apply anywhere that you've used the variable chip in the doc.

1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
2. Find a variable chip.
   • Tip: If a variable chip doesn't have any value assigned yet, it will have a black outline around the text.
3. Click the variable chip and enter the value.

See all of your variable chips in one place

1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
2. Go to Tools Variables.
3. From the right panel, you can:
   • Create a new variable: At the top, click New variable .
   • Rename variable chips: Hover over a variable chip, then click Edit name .
   • Insert existing variable chips into your doc: Hover over a variable chip, then click Insert.
   • Delete a variable chip: Hover over a variable chip, then click Delete . 
     • Important: If you delete a variable chip in the right panel, it will remove all instances of the variable chip in the document.
