Updates to support advertiser transparency and content moderation

We've made some changes to better support advertiser transparency and give people greater control of their ad experience. We upgraded and renamed Display & Video 360's Online Behavioral Advertising (OBA) compliance feature because of expanding regulatory requirements. These upgrades add support for advertiser transparency for all formats.

Updates to OBA compliance

On February 12, 2024, we made the following changes in Display & Video 360:

  • The OBA compliance setting was renamed from OBA compliance to Ad badging, transparency, and reporting.
  • When you create a new advertiser, Ad badging, transparency, and reporting is turned on by default.
  • When opted in, the current ad badges look the same, but now all ad formats (including video and audio) support Google's About this ad feature.
  • More information is included in the Basic details page of your advertiser settings, along with compliance requirements you need to meet if you choose to opt out.
  • You can opt out of Google's Ad badging, transparency, and reporting easily by changing your advertiser settings. You will be asked to confirm your solution meets regulatory requirements to turn off Google's About this ad.

What does this mean for me?

To find out if there's an impact for you, check your advertiser settings.

If you're opted in, no action is required

All creative formats now support About this ad. Through About this ad, people can learn more about your advertiser, why they're seeing your ad, and they can report illegal ad content.

If you're opted out, take action to remain opted out

If your advertiser is opted out of ad badging, transparency, and reporting and you're using a third-party compliance solution, you're responsible for complying with local regulations in the countries where your ads are served. This includes supporting compliance with the Digital Services Act when serving ads in the European Economic Area (EEA) by providing transparency information and a means to report illegal ad content. You're also responsible for sharing illegal content reports with Google using the appropriate form.

If you were opted out in early February, a notification appeared in Display & Video 360 asking you to review the updated regulatory requirements. If you didn't review and confirm the requirements by February 12, 2024, your advertiser was opted in. You can review the requirements and opt out at any time.

Check if you're opted in or out

You can see if you're opted in to Display & Video 360's About this ad feature by looking at the Basic details page in your advertiser settings.

  1. Go to Display & Video 360.
  2. Open your advertiser.
  3. In the left menu, click Advertiser settings, then Basic details.
  4. Under Authorizations, find Ad badging, transparency, and reporting.
    • If it's checked, your advertiser is opted in. No action is needed.
    • If it's not checked, your advertiser is opted out. You can select the checkbox "Use Google's About this ad feature..." to opt in or review the requirements and confirm that your compliance solution meets them. If it does, click "I confirm..." then Save.
