Deliver remnant networks in a specific order

Goal: Deliver remnant networks in a specific order

Example: Deliver the first two available remnant impressions per day from Network #1, the next three available remnant impressions to Network #2, and the next two to Network #3. AdSense will deliver when it's projected to beat the price of any network, or after all network impressions have been capped.

Description: Some publishers prefer to set up a defined order in which their networks will show up to each of their site visitors. For example, they may want Network #1 to deliver the first two available remnant impressions, Network #2 to show the next three available remnant impressions, Network #3 to show the next two, and so on. You'll accomplish this by setting different prices for each of your remnant line items, setting the impression goal to unlimited, and frequency capping the per user impression delivery.

When delivering remnant line items with an unlimited goal, price becomes the primary determinant of delivery. For example, a $1.00/cpm line item with an unlimited impression goal will always deliver ahead of a $0.99/cpm line item. In fact, the $0.99 line item will never serve unless there's a frequency cap set on the $1.00 line item. With a frequency cap set (e.g. two per user per day), the next lowest-priced line item will deliver after the higher-priced item has exhausted its delivery opportunities for each user.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Set up three line items, one for each network. (This can be done in three separate orders, or under one order)

  2. For the Network #1 line item, in addition to applicable targeting criteria, set:

    1. Impression goal to "unlimited"

    2. Price to the average price you're receiving from Network #1

    3. Frequency cap to two per day

  3. For the Network #2 line item, in addition to applicable targeting criteria, set:

    1. Impression goal to "unlimited"

    2. Price to the average price you're receiving from Network #2 (which is lower than Network #1 price)

    3. Frequency cap to three per day

  4. For the Network #3 line item, in addition to applicable targeting criteria, set:

    1. Impression goal to "unlimited"

    2. Price to the average price you're receiving from Network #3 (which is lower than Network #2 price)

    3. Frequency cap to two per day

  5. In the Inventory tab, ensure the AdSense competition is enabled for the ad slots you're targeting.
