To install the ResearchMeter VPN on the device that you want to enroll, follow these instructions:
Install Android VPN
In the Device Usage Study portal, visit the enroll page from the Android device that you wish to enroll. Follow the instructions to Download ResearchMeter from the Google Play Store.
Step 1: Install ResearchMeter
- In the Google Play Store
, tap Install.
- Tap Open.
Step 2: Set up ResearchMeter
- Once you open the ResearchMeter app, you may be automatically signed in.
- If you’re not automatically signed in, enter the Installation Code that the Device Usage Study provided to you, and tap Sign in.
- In the welcome screen, tap Get Started.
- You’ll be directed to the Setup Guide which has the necessary steps to complete the installation.
- Tap Accessibility Permission.
- To enable the required “Accessibility Service,” tap Next.
- You’ll be redirected to your Accessibility settings.
Step 3: Allow accessibility permissions
- Follow the steps below based on your device model.
- If you're on a Pixel device: Tap ResearchMeter in the “Downloaded apps” section and proceed to step 2.
- If you're on a Samsung device: Tap Installed apps.
- From the list of available apps, tap ResearchMeter.
- From the list of available apps, tap ResearchMeter.
- If you're on a Pixel device: Tap ResearchMeter in the “Downloaded apps” section and proceed to step 2.
- Use the toggle to turn on ResearchMeter.
- When you find a pop up, tap Allow.
Step 4: Install VPN to your device
- In the Setup Guide, tap Install VPN.
- At the bottom right, tap Next.
- To allow your device to connect to the VPN, tap OK.
Step 5: Install VPN Certificate
In the Setup Guide, tap Install VPN Certificate.
For devices on Android 10 and below
Install the root certificate on devices with Android 10 and below with these two steps:
- Tap Next in the “Install VPN Certificate” page.
- Tap OK in the pop-up window.
For devices on Android 11 and above
Installing the root certificate on devices running Android 11 or later requires extra steps compared to older Android versions. For devices with Android 11 and above, complete the steps below:
- In “Save VPN certificate,” at the bottom right, tap NEXT.
- To save the VPN certificate to your device, tap SAVE.
- The file gets saved to your device’s Downloads folder.

- Follow the on-screen instructions on how to install the VPN certificate.
- At the bottom right, tap Next.
- In your security settings, find the section that allows you to install a certificate.
- This will change based on the device's manufacturer.
- For Pixel devices, go to the “More security and privacy” section.
- For Samsung devices, go to the “More security settings” section.
- This step will change based on the device manufacturer.
- On Pixel, tap on Encryption and Credentials
Install a certificate.
- On Samsung, tap Install from device storage.
- On Pixel, tap on Encryption and Credentials
- Tap CA certificate.
- At the bottom left, tap Install anyway.
- Find and tap on the “ResearchMeter.crt” file.
- You’ll be redirected to the ResearchMeter app.
- You’ll be redirected to the ResearchMeter app.
Step 6: Grant permissions
The app directs you to grant permissions for the app. Follow the on-screen guidance.
- Tap Continue Setup.
- Tap Grant Permissions.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Allow.
- You’ll get notifications from the app for any configuration issues.

- Tap Done.
- The homepage of the app indicates whether you configured the VPN correctly. If there are any issues with the set-up, you’ll find them here:
