Add and configure filter controls

Learn how to add different kinds of filters to your reports.
In this article:

Add a filter control to a report

  1. Edit your report
  2. In the toolbar, select Filter control Dimension Filter icon
  3. Draw the filter control on the page
  4. On the right, use the Filter Control Properties to configure the filter control options. See below.

Filter control options

Just like charts, you configure the data and appearance of filter controls using the DATA and STYLE tab properties.

DATA tab options

Data Source

The data source provides the available filter control dimensions. Other components in the report that share the same data source will be affected by the filter.

The dimension provides the list of values that appear in the filter control.

This option displays a reference metric in the filter control. You can use this to sort the list, however, the viewer can't filter based on a metric value. To hide the metric, uncheck the Show values option.

This option controls the sort order and number of values listed in the control. You can sort the filter values list in either ascending or descending order by the dimension values, or by the reference metric.

Show top #

This option limits the number of items displayed in the filter control. If the number of items available exceeds this limit, remaining items are grouped into "All others."

Default Date Range

This option limits the values displayed in the filter control to the range you specify.

You can restrict the data displayed in the filter control by including or excluding the values you specify.

STYLE tab options

This is the default style. List style filters let viewers select the dimension values from a list of check boxes. List style filter controls are limited to displaying the first 10,000 values from the selected dimension.

This embedded report lets you filter the geo map by country:

  • Scroll through the list of countries.
  • To deselect a selected country, uncheck its checkbox.
  • To select just one country, hover over it and click ONLY.
  • To select or deselect all countries, click the checkbox in the upper left of the filter list.

Search All

Search All style filter controls let viewers search for text dimension values using the following operators:

  • Equals—the value exactly matches the search term. (Case sensitive.)
  • Contains—the value contains the search term.
  • Starts With—the value begins with the search term.
  • Regexp—the value matches the regular expression
  • In—the value matches one or more of the search terms (enter search terms separated by commas).

You can search for numeric dimensions values using the following operators:

  • Between—the value is between the starting and ending numbers.
  • >=—the value is greater than or equal to the number.
  • >—the value is greater than the number.
  • <=—the value is less than or equal to the number.
  • <—the value is less than the number.
  • In—the value matches one or more of the search terms (enter search terms separated by commas).
Use Search All filters if your filter dimensions has more than 10,000 values.

Use the search options to display all the countries whose ISO code includes the letter "z:"

  1. Set the operator to CONTAINS.
  2. In the search box, enter Z
  3. Press return.

Expandable filter controls appear as a drop-down menu. Viewers can click the control to display list of values. Unchecking this option lets you resize the control to display as many values as you want.

To select values, expand the filter control.

Show Top #

Show Top # sets the number of values shown in the list. Values below the threshold you set are grouped into an All Others category. You can display a maximum of 10,000 items in list.

Try it out!

In this example, the filter control shows the top 5 countries by number of sessions. The rest of the world is grouped into "All others."

Single Select

Single Select filters permit the viewer to choose only one option from the list of filter values. To set a default value, enter it in the field that appears beneath the Single Select option. You must enter the value exactly as it appears in the data.

Try it out!

In this example, you can select just one value at a time. India is selected by default.

Enable Search Box

Enable Search Box lets viewers search inside a list style filter control.

Compact Numbers

Compact Numbers rounds the metric value, and displays the unit indicator. Example: 553,939 becomes 553.9K.

Decimal Precision

Decimal Precision sets the number of digits after the decimal point for metric values.

In this example, decimal precision is set to 2 places.

Make a filter control appear on every page

By default, filter controls are page-level objects: they only appear on the page on which they are placed. To change the scope of the filter control and have it appear on every page of a report, make it a report-level component. To do this:

  1. Edit the report.
  2. Select the filter control.
  3. Select the Arrange > Make Report-level menu.

Your filter control now appears in the same location on every page of your report. Filter settings made on one page carry over to all the pages in the report.

Restrict a filter control to specific charts

By default, Data Studio tries to apply filter control settings to all the charts on the page. You can restrict a filter to a subset of charts by grouping the filter with those charts. To do this, select the filter and one or more charts. Then use the Arrange > Group menu (or right-click and and select Group). Now, the filter only applies to the charts in this group.

Filter your filters

Filter controls can filter other filter controls. For example, say you have one filter on the Country dimension, and a second filter on the Campaign dimension. Filtering on Country = France causes the Campaign filter to only show campaigns that ran in France. Similarly, filtering on campaign "ABC" restricts the Country filter to only those countries where that campaign ran.
