Create a new report
Creating reports in Data Studio is easy! In this tutorial, you'll build a useful and attractive report in just a few steps.
Let's get started!
Create a new blank report
- Sign in to Data Studio. After signing in, you'll see the Home page, with the REPORTS tool selected.
- In the bottom right, click .
You'll now see the report editor, with a blank canvas waiting for you to tell your story in data.You won't see any of the editor controls or menus until you add a data source (in the next step).
In the top left of the screen, next to the Data Studio logo, click Untitled Report and enter a new name for your report.
Add a data source to the report
Use the Data Source Picker on the right to add the
[Sample] Google Analytics Datadata source to this report. A confirmation dialog will appear.
- Click ADD TO REPORT
Now that you've got some data to play with:
- Use the toolbar at the top of the page to add charts and controls to the report.
- Use the properties panel on the right to change the data, and to style selected components.
Add a table (using the toolbar)
Tables are great for presenting the details of your data.
- Click the Table tool on the toolbar: .
- Click on the page: the table appears in the default size and fields.
- To adjust the chart's position, click and drag it, or select the chart and move it using your keyboard arrow keys.
Each press of the arrow key moves the chart one full column or row (10 px) on the grid. Hold the Shift key down while using your arrow keys to nudge the selected components into place a pixel at a time.
- To adjust the chart's size, select it, then drag a corner or mid-line point.
Your table should now display a default dimension and a default metric, like the example below. (This example is an actual Data Studio embedded report. Try interacting with the table with your mouse.)
Add a time series chart (using the menu)
The time series chart plots data over the course of time.
- Here's another way to add a chart: click the Insert menu, then select Time Series. Position the crosshairs on the page where you want the chart to appear, then draw a box.
- Data Studio automatically adds the Date dimension and the Source metric (assuming you're using an Analytics data source).
- Let's breakdown the chart by Device Category:
- Make sure the time series is selected.
- On the right, under Available Fields, use the search tool to find the Device Category dimension.
- Drag the field and drop it on the Breakdown Dimension target.
Your chart should now display data series for the different device categories (Mobile, Desktop, and Tablet):
Style the report
Add a background color to your report:
- Select the File > Report and theme settings menu.
- Select the THEME tab.
- Scroll down to the Background and Border section
- Use the color picker to set the Background color to your favorite color. Something in a mauvy-peach, perhaps?
Add a banner
Use a colored rectangle as a background banner for your report header.
- Select the Page component by clicking anywhere in the grid area.
- Select the Rectangle tool from the toolbar.
- Draw a rectangle across the top of the page.
- Select the STYLE tab of the Rectangle Properties panel on the right.
- Set the rectangle background color to blue.
When one color fades into another, the effect is called a gradient. Gradients are an option of the background color property.
- Click the background color control:
- Click Gradient.
The left and right color swatches determine the starting and ending colors. Enter the specific color hex values, choose from the palette, or use the vertical sliders to select the color.
The orientation arrow controls the flow of the gradient.
Add a title to the report
- Select the Text tool from the toolbar.
- Draw a textbox inside the banner rectangle.

- Highlight the text. Use the Text Properties panel on the right to change the font color and the font size to something that looks nice to you.
Hey! Where's the SAVE button?
Data Studio automatically saves every change you make, so there's no need to click Save when editing a report. Pretty sweet!
